A few years ago a gold wedding ring was lost on a gravel drive/front garden, and for sentimental reasons I want to find it. I know nothing about metal detectors - what sort would be appropriate please?

I would imagine a basic detector would suffice for such a job. Why not Hire one?

Well, for £20 a day plus having to get it and return it - I wondered if a cheap one would work on a gold ring.

Strewth! I did not realise how Cheap they could be purchased for. I guess at those sort of prices it would be worth the purchase, then after finding the ring, going on to find other treasures, thus paying for it's self.

I have a Tesoro Sand Shark, pulse detector, fully waterproof to a depth of lots of meters. WOuld recommend this if your drive is underwater.

Ooh, serious ones! North Essex would be handier though!

You're very welcome to borrow mine - but you're a distance away.

To be honest, buying one (as you originally suggested) is the best bet as it's a moderately useful device to have.

This one from Amazon would do the trick...

Thanks NDA - might just get that. I wasn't sure how much one to do the job would cost.

ETA: I could get one of these today - any good? http://www.screwfix.com/prods/35724/Security/Metal...

What's the general difference between round ones and pointy ones?

The one in your link is for scanning clothing really.

The one I linked to earlier is the one I have at home I think - it does the job. It should find any metal objects on the drive - as with all gadgets, there'll be bigger, faster, funkier ones. smile

Probably not a bad idea if planning to ever use it on the beach anyway.

My o/h was put off using it on the beach after the excitement of finding a 'pirate cannon' was dulled by the gradually dawning reality that it was an old sewerage pipe. And my collection of bottle-tops, 1970-2009 is really quite impressive.

A few months back I managed to lose my wedding ring while on a trip to the Farne Islands. Luckily it was on Inner Farne rather than over the side of the boat. I was rather gutted as it has been in the family since 1869, and returned a few weeks later with a metal detector hired from HSS more in hope than expectation. Against all the odds we found it! (cue a few celebratory pints when back on the mainland). I can therefore confirm that the detectors hired by HSS are fit for purpose!

Actually I was just about to take the plunge and buy one when I thought - 'I'll have a scrape around in the gravel drive first'. So I did, but no luck, and then a new tenant moved in... so the ring is still there somewhere (I think) and I'll have to try harder next time!
