Our cat has been diagnosed with a thyroid problem and has to take pills now. How are you supposed to get a cat to eat them? At £30 a go she's got to take them.

Hold cat with one hand, with the other, open the jaws wide and throw the tablet to the back of the cat's throat.

Close mouth and hold it closed, stroking the front of the neck.

Works for me smile

One thing worth trying is wrapping the cat, paws and all, in a big towel and cradling it upside down so that your assistant can prise open the jaws and drop the tablet in, finishing off with a quickle tickle of the throat.

Of course, the cat may well then spit the tablet out.

You could try wrapping the tablet in a very tasy piece of food, say chicken or tuna, and get the cat to swallow it whole.

On the other hand, cats aren't stupid.

Method for cat:

Get one person to straddle cat and hold it securely between their legs. Get that same person to put their hands gently around cat's neck in order to hold cat's head securely. Then, get another person to use their thumb and finger to gently force open cat's mouth and pop pill in. Raise cat's head, gently close cat's mouth and hold closed whilst rubbing cat's throat. Repeat until pill is finally swallowed. This may take all of eternity.

Method for dog:

Throw pill towards dog. Done.

Loads of ways.... If you hold the cats cheeks it should open its mouth involuntarily, you pop the pill clamp the jaws and stroke the throat forcing it to swallow. If that fails you can mash the pill into fav food. Offer a small amount and it should eat it. If that fails, in the past I have got a syringe full of milk, pop pill in mouth in shoot a shot of milk in. The cat will reflex swallow. Lastly, if the at is fairly docile just put the pill on the palm with a few treats and let it eat the lot. If all these fail shoot it.

1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with lef hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of 10.

4. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

5. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, holding front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold cat's head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

6. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

7. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with its head just visible from below spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

8. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

9. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

10. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

11. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

12. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Force cat's mouth open with small spanner. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 1/2 pint of water down throat to wash pill down.

13. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room; sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Stop by furniture shop on way home to order new table.

14. Arrange for vet to make a housecall.

My cat was on blood pressure tabs for the last couple of years of his life - used to crush them up with a spoon and sprinkled into a small portion of his food first thing in the morning. Once he had eaten that, I would then give him the rest of his breakfast.

Htae to tell you this but this will probabaly become a very very expensive problem.

Our last cat had a thyroid problem as well - he was huge. So tablets were the answer, i think he needed a course every three months or something.

One of my cats needs 3 tablets a day, has done for years, so she has gotten very used to it.

What I do is place her on her back on my lap, then I use my right hand to hold her head and open the jaws, then my left hand to pop the tablet right into the back of her throat, and then close the mouth.

Also, I took to showing her a treat before she got the tablets, and if she is good, she gets the treat, if she is grumpy, she doesn't get the treat. It seemed to work quite well, because she wants the treat I can flip her on her back, stick her on my lap and just leave her there for 10-15 seconds whilst I sort out which tablet is first etc and she just sits and waits. Of course, this has taken time to perfect...

And there was me thinking you were a cat owner. What a sham.

OP - you need to hold the cat with one hand, open the jaws with another, then with your third hand, pop the pill into their mouth, then with the fourth, clamp their jaws shut. Finally, with the fifth hand, rub their throat to make them swallow it.
