what does isbn mean

the unique ID code every book has printed on its cover somewhere.

with this number you can quickly find any book from any source

its a unique number every book has - usually about 12 digits long

International Standard Book Number - unique identifier for every edition of nearly every book printed. Bloody clever idea, since the numbers have a hierarchical meaning and can be expanded to cover subjects not even thought of yet.

(wow, that'll teach me not to stop for a coffee half-way through a reply)
