I know I'm not going to win this little contest but thought it might be an interesting thread.

I have for one client driven to Brussels for the day, the meeting took 20 minutes and I drove all the way home. 650 odd miles for 20 minutes!

Tomorrow I'm driving to Paris for a meeting, approximately 400 miles from home and driving back 400 miles the same day. I could stay overnight, but to be honest just want to get back home and in the current financial climate save some money wink

What's the longest drive (or fly) for the shortest meeting/stay you've ever had?

Over to the PH 'well travelled' massive smile

270 miles from Cardiff to Norwich.

Doesn't sound that bad, until you look at the roads - it takes around 6-7 hours to do that journey.

That was for a 1 hour meeting - although I did stay the night afterwards. But my car broke down twice (dodgy fuel pump on a Passat TDI) - and I ended up coming home in a Fiat Bravo.

Drove from Colchester to Glasgow and back in one day to pick up a friend whose plane home from holiday was diverted from its planned landing at Stansted.

Had to go via the Peak District on the way back to drop their friend off.

A few miles short of 1000 - left at 2pm Saturday; got home at 6am Sunday.

Travelled to Germany several times for court cases and never been called. It's involved overnight hotel stays and meals paid for, all with no appparent point.

eek Which way do you go??? I regularly travel from Norwich to Abergavenny via the A14 and can do it in 4-4.5 hours at a steady 65-70mph. Cardiff is only approx 30miles away, easily doable in under 5 hours.

Dubai for 3 hours, just to hand carry a piece of equipment over to a colleague.

My father's friend recently went to Auckland for the day. Just a business meeting, but still, I'd have made time for a few days off while I was there.

Furthest I've driven on a return trip of a single day has been Paris from London. Not a huge distance in the grand scheme of things.

Usk - Monmoth - M50 - M5 - M42 - M6 - A14, as I recall.

There are several dodgy traffic points on the route.

M42 to the M40 junction gets really badly jammed up in the mornings, as does the Catthorpe interchange, then you have the delays on the A14, usually caused by elephant racing truck drivers, the area around Godmanchester is bloody awful at times.

However, despite all of that, it's still a better route than the M4- M25.

All depends on the time of day you do it - I used to try and get out of the house at 5am, which meant I pretty much hit traffic all the way - but it wasn't worth risking leaving any later.

Think I might just have this one - indirectly.

I was required to travel from London to Sydney and back for a 2 hour meeting after a tender was successfully shortlisted, and we appeared to be in position A. I declined and 2 of my colleagues did it instead - they wanted to anyway - stop over in Singapore etc.

It had better bloody close, the business class airfare cost was immense !

I went to Seoul for a meeting. 17 hours flying to get there. A day and a halves scheduled meeting was done and dusted in three hours.

I did once drop everything at the last minute to fly to the channel islands at one day's notice.

Flew out in the morning, had 4 meetings on Jersey, flew to Guernsey, stayed overnight, 4 meetings the following day, then flew back to Exeter.

That was a bit hectic.

Pales into insignificance compared to some stuff here, though.

This stuff is all excellent.. I regularly do 500 mile round trips in the 540.

Totting up my cardboard footprint is much more fun than even my mileage claims.

Have that, polar bears... biggrin

Met a few guys at the RWC2003 final in Sydney who, once England were through, had snagged tickets, flown out to watch the game and were heading straight back to the airport afterwards.

Personally, mine pales in comparison biggrin 6 hours to Pwhelli (or however you spell it) on the northwest coast of Wales from Reading to install some telephone logging software. Discovered after 10 minutes the switch wasn't installed by BT so a wasted trip and decided to go to my girlfriend's in Cardiff instead of back to Reading.

Didn't know the A45 (I think) was such a bad idea - 6 hours to do that too biggrin
