Never done this before and fully expect all the "don't do it" comments but seriously need to get some advice on what to do with regards to buying the ring.

Now I don't fancy spending a load of money on a ring she then does not like so what is the correct form? Do I buy a 'cheaper' prop ring just to do the deed and then choose the 'proper' one when she has said yes??

Help!

2.If she hasn't already, subtly or otherwise, let you know what sort of ring she likes, she probably doesn't want to marry you.

I proposed sans ring and then she chose it. If I could do it again, I would choose the ring and propose with it (makes it more special IMO). When in doubt, save up and buy a small blue box

Buy the ring after you ask her, thta way she can choose the ring she has to wear for the rest of your married life. So cliched going down on one knee and showing her the size of the rock you think will buy her 'yes' answer.

Yep, I've had the 'subtle' hints on the style she likes.

.....and I'm pretty sure she will say yes, but then what do I know!!

That's a good start.

So go get the ring, the jeweller will exchange it and re-size etc.. if needs be.

I may well get flamed for this, but I took a female friend along shopping for a woman's view on the style etc. of the engagement ring, plus it helps a lot (IMHO) to see it on a finger ( of course the friend put it on a different finger )....

I popped the question, then we bought it the next day

Also if you buy antique ring not only is it unique but you don't pay VAT, which depending on how much you spend, can be quite horrendous.
