whilst watching send in the dogs last night i heard one handler say his dog can do 100m in 4 secs! now i know some dogs are quick but not that bloody fast! is it that they are quick off the mark or is the bloke talking it up a bit?

Not far off id say that Bolt fella can do 100m in 8 or something? im sure a greyhound could catch him if he had a dead rabbit around his waist.

If my sums are correct (and theres every chance they aren't) thats about 56mph. I think I remember hearing that a good greyhound will do 45mph so I reckon he's telling tall tails.

First response and seems OK if you ask me. I watched the same programme and they said that a Police Dog can do 30MPH, so its plausible, though someone else will have to work out the maths - I am just to thick....

Wouldn't the dead rabbit somewhat impede the dog if tied around it's waist?

Even if correct or not, even Bolt will struggle to out run a dog, though he might get the lead on a 100m sprint. Unfortunately the fastest man in the world cannot keep this up for long and the dog will get him anyway. So if Bolt is screwed then that pretty much eliminates 99.9999% of the human race. Game over...

30 mph = 48kph. At 48 kph you will cover 1km in 75 seconds, so 100M in 7.5 seconds. Quick, but not as quick as claimed!!

Doing the maths of a greyhound running at 45mph (72km/h) it would be running at 20m per second when at full pelt?

I thought greyhounds were much faster, capable of 50 or 60mph...

I exercised a (working) greyhound for someone once. I was surprised at just how quick it was. It also had an annoying habit of running past at full tilt with inches to spare - wouldn't like to be run into by one of them.

Well a glance at the greyhound form states the average time around the 470m Belle vue track as just under 30 seconds.

So 15m/s would be a good estimate.

When you take into acount the curvature of the track, the fact dogs can take rubbish lines and the initially acceleration from the trap, they are damned quick.

ETA: That's an average of 33mph according to google.

so 4 secs for a big gsh is pretty much rubbish then, saying that would not fancy one of those police dogs on my case, one bloke on there last night had a nicely chewed arm for his trouble.

4 seconds to 100 metres?

If professionally trained and bred greyhounds only manage 60 metres in 4 seconds I think you can safely say it's complete bks.

The answer is quicker than a man.

I'd say one of my dogs can, when he wants, clear 200 about yards in 9-10 seconds - because he did it one day when he spotted a deer.....
