Another bit of our history blown up!
Discussion
Those of you who use the M1 between J26-J27 will be familiar with the Watnall Brickworks chimneys which stand at Watnall in Nottinghamshire. For me they have always been a sign that i'm nearly home.
Following the land being put up for sale and the council having the need to build more houses they have all of a sudden been declared unsafe and this evening were demolished... (me, cynic, no...)
Being the ever nosey person I am I blagged myself access to a bridge over the M1 to watch them being demolised. Despite loosing a landmark and part of our local heritage you've got to admit that explosions are pretty cool!!
Shame about the trees being in the way but it was as close as I could get.
How they were before: (Click for bigger)

Video of the demolition: (Sorry for poor quality too, was mobile phone)

Shame, that looked like an interesting and slightly quirky landmark. There was a similar but singular tall chimney (originally attached to some kind of pottery kiln) close to were I livid as a child, demolished to make way for flats.
You could argue the its not good to live in some kind of permanent museum but it seems a bit criminal to knock down every single reminder of our industrial past.

I suppose they were loosing them, since they came apart, but I knew you actually meant losing...Following the land being put up for sale and the council having the need to build more houses they have all of a sudden been declared unsafe and this evening were demolished... (me, cynic, no...)

Do you really know what vaporised my urine?
The fact that in the middle of Brooklands, you know the worlds first purpose made race track there is a god damned tesco, MS, Argos etc... who are just leaving the old banked corners to rot.
You can't even go and take a look at them or some rent a bobby appears and tells you to f off.

My first thought when I read that was Tilehurst Medway Centre (grew up in Pangbourne myself) then saw your profile said Berkshire - spooky You could argue the its not good to live in some kind of permanent museum but it seems a bit criminal to knock down every single reminder of our industrial past.

It's a real shame that, the track is falling apart and covered in moss and weeds, I've driven on part of it and it was most uncomfortable and I was in a small SUV... Brooksland is indeed a crying shame - Google Map it and it show's you how it's been left to rot and destroyed in most of the areas.

If only cars had ghosts....
Ah now I grew up next to Brooklands and some of the roads around there are named after famous drivers such as John Campbell. There were the old stories about the tunnels where the public used to go under to get into the complex are haunted by the ghosts of those drivers who lost their lives going over the top in their bid for glory.Another good story is the old bridge that used to go over the Wey was declared unsafe and needed to be demolished.
So this unsafe bridge took two attempts from the Army to knock down.
I also know the backway into the Museum is anyone is interested

t reason was made to bring down Winwick water tower. The council did agree to keeping it for two years after it's original surrounding structures were torn down, it was a beautiful example of a Victorian water tower, but because the council destroyed Winwick hospital and built up a posh housing estate around it, they decided to let a builder knock it down instead.
