Friend of mine left a company yesterday but still knew the code to log into their voicemail - standard 4 digit pin that nobody changed.

Overnight he called up using the 141 withhold code and changed all the directors voicemail greetings to various Family Guy scenes.

I pointed out that it was going to be quite obvious who it was and whether or not he had withheld his number, they may just be interested in taking it further.

He's going to jail isn't he!?

Depends what kind of trail he left, If this was me, Id do it from a phone box, I would also change my voicemail too.

Doubt there would be sufficient evidence for a conviction TBH

141 only withholds the number from the recipient of the call, it can still be traced by the telephone company and thus the police. Tell you mate this and watch him st himself all weekend biggrin

I always thought that 141 withheld your number from the line you were using, stopped it being sent.

Regardless, I will tell him this.

However, on the funny side, bbb b bird, birds the word etc.

I like that!

There are 16 directors apparently, 13 of which had the standard 1234# security code.

So I hope those 13 do have sense of humours.

He didn't particularly need the references as was leaving to set up on his own but I was more concerned from a legal standpoint? I think he regrets it as he can't reset them and the directors needn't notice until someone points it out to them. It could be there for days.

I am assuming he doesn't expect to be paid any money he's owed?

Can't he reset them to just silence. The directors will assume something has gone wrong with the system and set their own voicemail again.

That has got to be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard!

Might have seemed a laugh at the time, but what are clients going to think when they hear it? Are they going to 'get' the joke? Or are they going to think "Forget it, I'd rather deal with a company who takes me seriously!"

What other systems did he have access to? I bet they won't think that having to pay your IT dept while they audit their systems and try to figure out if he's redirected the backups to /dev/null 'for a laugh'?

If I was the company in question, I would tot up the cost of the damage, send him a bill and withold it from his notice and holiday pay.

How is it you and your mates seem to do the stupidest things?

Are you 12 still?

Could this be classed as some kind of 'denial of service attack'. I'm not sure that's exactly what I mean though...

Nothing to do with me this one. I broke the cat and drank some whisky, you won't see many 12 year olds doing that.

I have a lot of acquaintances who don't think before they act.
