Beautiful isalnd, extremely small though. If you have kids at school, you iwll love the small town feel, when they get older, they will hate!! Most people I knwo there have shcooled their kids on mainland, (borders).
They have some interesting laws too. I think they still birch people there, and IIRC being a "freind of Dorothy" / "Brown Hatter" is a no no, too! (although maybe I made that bit up!)

Financial benefits of the IOM to residents.
Personal Tax - High personal allowance currently £9,200 for 2008/2009 which doubles to £18,400 if jointly assessed.
Personal income tax rates 2008/2009 - lower rate of tax 10% of the first £10,500, or £21,000 if jointly assessed after personal allowances and higher rate of tax 18% on taxable income above £10,500 or £21,000 if jointly assessed.
Personal tax capped at £100,000 for high income earners.
Additional age allowance introduced for 2008/2009 onwards of £2000 for resident tax payers of 65 years or above.
Mortgage interest relief of up to £15,000 per person, £30,000 if jointly assessed each year from 2008/2009.
No capital taxes to be paid on capital gains, inheritance or wealth.

My dad is Manx, I spent a lot of time as a child on the Island...
It's a beautiful place to live.
It is very small and you soon develop cabin fever.
People from Douglas talk about going "North" like it's far away. They mean a half hour drive to Ramsey.
There are some stunning properties with superb land and unspoilt views.
There are drunken scum/teens/chavs in town centres every weekend just like "here".
Everyone will know your business if you tell anybody anything.
You will always be a "comeover".
You will never truly fit in, you'll be tolerated though.
If you do anything wrong (illegal) you will likely be banned from the island for a period of 5 years.
Cars are expensive to purchase on the island.
Sea travel is expensive and flights are inconvenient and weather dependant.
There are some brilliant pubs on the quayside in Douglas to challenge even the hardiest of drinkers.
Diving off the coast is superb.
There are many fine Irish women, most are hotel staff or nurses.

I know a number of people who live over there and regularly pop over. Most of this is true, although if you are a "comeover" the level of acceptance you receive is directly linked to the level of effort you put in to fitting in.It's a beautiful place to live.

If you were young and single I personally would forget it right now as anything other than a very short term move, and then you will not get much out of a place that has much to offer.
Living costs wise add about a penny to most prices, bank on spending a couple of grand a year on ferries and flights
I lived in Port Erin for 8 years 1976-1984.
I'd move back there tomorrow.
If you make the effort to be part of the community, then you will fit right in and be welcomed.
If you go over there with an attitude problem, then you will deserve all that you get.

Not sure Nige lives there now, seem to remember seeing his house for sale over there.
JC does and I think had a major dispute with the locals about a right of way bordering or on his land or something tedious like that!!
I've worked over there a couple of times, didn't spend very long there but would agree with everything said so far, particularly you will get cabin fever very quickly!!
