I have been working at the MOD now for 2 years. It is bonus time and I was clecking over my pay slip and comparing it to a friends.

It was then that I noticed I was paying another £110 a month tax than they were. My tax code is BR where as theres is xxxL.

I understand BR to mean Basic Rate for a second job or Emergancy tax.

Am I right in understanding that I can claim this back?

Who do I need to contact in regard to this? I am on the phone to the PPPA (our People, Pay and Pensions Agency) at the moment to speak to them.

Any advice would be great!

I've just done this today, as it happens. Give your local tax office a call and ask them.

You've been on Basic Rate tax for 2 yrs and havent noticed?

You should be in for a nice tax rebate in the next few months.

Why are you on BR?

How long have you been on BR?

If you should not have been on BR, you can reclaim any incorrectly paid tax going back six years. For your information, the tax free allowance levels for the past six years and this year are:

2002/03 - £4,615 (461L)
2003/04 - £4,615 (461L)
2004/05 - £4,745 (474L)
2005/06 - £4,895 (489L)
2006/07 - £5,035 (503L)
2007/08 - £5,225 (522L)
2008/09 - £6,035 (603L)
2009/10 - £6,475 (647L)

The potential tax overpaid relating to these allowances would work out as follows

2002/03 - £784.90
2003/04 - £780.10
2004/05 - £801.50
2005/06 - £826.10
2006/07 - £849.70
2007/08 - £881.90
2008/09 - £1,207.00

Total - £6,131.20

2009/10 - £1,295.00

You normally get put on it when you come from another job but dont have your P45 to hand to the new company.

I have just spoken to the IR and they said for this tax year it should be added to this months payslip and I should get a cheque in the post within 4-5 weeks for the rest of it biggrin

Well I now know how I am going to fund my engine rebuild on the race car!

I'm not sure what 'getting skanked' means? can someone explain?

I thought it was 'street talk' for getting stabbed.

You are probably thinking of shanked which I believe is prison slang for a stabbing.

It's an additional tax penalty for your appalling spelling and grammar.

There is also a little known "Chav" tax code for people wearing tracksuits.
