We're being told to cut down on booze again, according to yet another "headline story" on the BBfkingC news.

Apparently we drink too much whilst on holiday and should be using next month to 'detox', "September should become the new January" it trumpets. It's a fking HOLIDAY you s, we're supposed to be relaxing, most likely abroad away from you nannying bds.

Seems like every other day there's some story or other telling us to stop boozing.

It's fking relentless, when will these bds leave us alone?

Didn't Marx say their would never be a civil uprising in Great Britain because we have too many "petty pleasures"?

If he was right expect a st storm in a decade or so when you can't afford fags, petrol and booze.

Then equilibrium will be restored..

There's not much news around, this will be an off the shelf story to fill time.

'detox' is a myth, your internal organs do that for you, otherwise you'd be poisoned.

God only knows who they surveyed though, who on earth only consumes 8 units a day whilst on holiday?

Thought it was 8 drinks, such as a pint.

Not the average Joe, but a very small and significant minority who have the power to change things.

Just watch helplessly as they put the prices up drastically and work out more and more ways of FORCING us to cut down.

Just like they have done with fags rage

I don't smoke, just believe in freedom of the individual

These days a 'drink' is a unit. Sounds more dramatic. Half a carling.

This is not a personal liberties issue, it´s a tax issue. At least they´re following the standard procedure.

"Booze is bad, gives you cancer etc."
"The government will save you from yourself"
"The way to do this is by raising taxes"

Tax on booze will rise sharply because the government is skint and they are running out of ways to take more of our cash. That´s about it, really.

Regardless of whether someone's trying to control the life of others or not, 8 drinks every day for a week or two sounds a bit grim to me.

Wouldn't it be great......if for one week (or possibly one day) the whole nation did not buy a single unit of alcohol or cigarettes.

Then let the government see how much tax they'd miss out on if everyone listened to them. I bet they'd be shouting to drink and smoke then!!

(mind you, the saving in health costs would be significant too, probably)

I've always been a believer that all societies need a social drug.

If everyone stopped drinking I honestly think the increased numbers medicated with depression would cost an absolute fortune.

It wouldn't work for the same reason as the petrol forecourt boycotts.

How do you think the government receive their tax? You buy a pint, the landlord puts it in his till where a little elf flies it on a magic carpet to westminster?

In the grand scheme of things, a day won't make a difference. If you could abstain for a quarter, it might have some effect... but then, we are talking about the UK here, a nation of people that couldn't even wait for their plasma telly.

It's the same with the parking nazis. If we all just stopped parking illegally for 6 months, the private clampers and targets for traffic wardens would go away. But no... what we'll do is sit around moaning and plotting one day protests that won't be noticed.

How much would they save in alcohol related problems that the NHS treat?

Absolutely nothing.

But probably a fair bit from the ones the NHS wouldn't have to.

About £3bn, but as alcohol tax raises £8bn, thats £5bn lost until it raised by taxing something else.
