Recommend me some boots

High folks,

I am after a pair of boots... wanted to spend some money and get some very good quality.

They need to be warm, have good grip, comfy, long lasting etc.

I have hiking boots, so not really after that sort of thing.

I used to have a pair of Rockports that lasted me 10 years. Are Rockports still as good?

I had a pair of Rockports that lasted me about 15 years and IMO they look better with age. I bought another pair and the quality seems to be just as good. I wear mine all the time (although not with trackie bottoms and baseball caps...)

I have a pair of Salomons. not hiking boots, just a tougher version of your average timberland/rockport/wrangler desert boot.

Timberland Pro Series - I've had 3 pairs of the Pit Boss steel toe in the last 10 years, bloody comfortable boots, and very good value IMO.

I'm popping into their factory on Tuesday to buy some. I'll report back.

I've heard very good things about them and reckon it's worth giving them a whirl as I'm going past anyway

Well general purpose really...

The snowfall this year exposed the gap in my footwear lineup.

Want something waterproof, good in the snow (if we get any), good for walking, working in the garden, casual wear, that sort of thing.

Another vote for RM Williams. They are sublime. The only footwear you will ever need.

I never knew you could get RM Williams stuff in the UK, only ever seen it in Oz, but a quick Google shows plenty of stockists.

For a less "fashion" boot, I'd recommend AltBergs. We get issued them at work, although I did previously buy myself a pair as well. Probably the comfiest boots I've ever owned, and they can be resoled/relined if the leather's been properly cared for.

I also use AltBergs on the bike - they started out a bit tight and stiff, but now they're comfy as anything. I use them all year round, and they haven't leaked a drop - no Gore Tex liner, just decent boots, but you do have to take care of them.

They have a shop on New Bond Street (Oxford street end).

I have had a pair for nearly 8 years and have never cleaned them once....and they are going strong.

I love Panama Jack boots, but they are quite difficult to find over here.

Got my Panama Jacks from Russell & Bromely in Bath. Veeeery comfy, feel like they'll last a good while too.
