VHS Recordings

I have acquired approximately 600 VHS video tapes of TV recordings from 1982 to 1990's. Subject matter varies from Morecambe and Wise shows, Royalty Variety Performances, Films,Serials and Concerts etc etc etc.

They are all titled and indexed.

Do I bin them or are they of possible interest to anyone??

If you have no further use and are thinking of getting rid, Freecycle them and they're bound to go to a good home.

Remember some programmes were erased in the early days due to high cost of videotape - Perhaps some could be rare footage?
Is there an archive company like the BBC that might be interested?

Just too make it clear, I have acquired these from clearing the house of a deceased relative. Lots of love and respect to him and the trouble, time and interest he put into recording these but what can I do with them ??

I have a contact in BBC Archives. I'll email her and ask if she is interested if that is of interest?

Don't bin them - you may have irreplaceable stuff there.

It's easy to poo-poo VHS because it's not HD digital widescreen 27:1 digital 5.1 yadayada, but content is content.

Wouldn't it be illegal to sell them off? Given it was a VHS recording of a TV program, and assuming your don't have the copywriters permission to sell the program.

Technically yes - but in 20 years the copyright holders might pay good money to get them back!

(copyWriting is rather different)

Please don't bin them until someone who knows about these things has had a chance to evaluate the tapes.

So many important programmes which were thought to have been lost for ever have turned up in private collections just like your deceased relatives'.

It would be fitting tribute to their devotion to their hobby if an important programme was found amongst the collection.

I'd see what happens to MJB's suggestion of contacting the BBC archives.

It's funny how something that's 10 years old is junk, yet when it's 60 years old it's rare and desirable.

Digitising them would be good if you can do it, because tape can only deteriorate, especially if kept in a roasting hot attic for years.
