Just been over dinner with work colleagues about marriage.

Does anyone think that maybe better relationships were created when people got married at the drop of a hat? Rather than the current situation where only reason people seem to get married is they have run out of things to talk about.

Most long time, or really happy, marriages I see regularly are those that are engaged in a short space of time. Instead of the usual dating for years scenario that seems to go on now?

Personally I think this would decrease divorce rate.

I don't think that humans were 'designed' to stay in long-term relationships; marriage or otherwise.

They are an imposed convention, contrary to our natural programming.

IMO, naturally.

What would decrease the divorce rate is :

1) Both parties put the other first in everything, and NEVER say 'what about me !'
2) Both parties treat their vows as promises they intend NEVER to break.
3) Both parties have the same general outlook on life and similar ambitions.
4) Both parties to believe that they are Fecking lucky to have met the other.

Loyalty, Honesty, Trust and Love are all it takes for a marriage to last.

I've been married to my long suffering wife for 19 and a bit years. We were courting for 4 years before that, but lived in separate student accomodation some 20 miles apart (That's how far coventry is from Brum ?). We've had good times and bad, and I've posted a few of the details here, but we love each other still.

yes

I found out last weekend that a couple I know are quite happy to, er, No.2 in front of each other.

Have they reached a whole new level of togetherness or a whole new level of wierdness?

I'd say the latter IMO.

Couldn't agree more.

People change over time - some are lucky and will still be 'in tune' with their OH, others will change and want different things than they wanted 5, 10, 15 years previously. That doesn't make them bad people, it just makes them human.

Wrong... 31 years married, still love cars, bikes and each other. Life is great.

It's not for everyone, but if you ever meet 'THE ONE' you might find you'll do anything to keep her, and if she says "Marriage, 4 kids, a guinea pig, a cat, and a Toyota Pious" you'll just do it.

^^^ And this.

Added to which I'd say that no-one should get married before they're at least 35 (admittedly a bit of a problem for wimmin who want to have children).

..and if you're not married then it's easier to just walk away. Obviously married couples do it too, but it's altogether a bit more complicated and some percentage of them will take the easy option and will stay together.

Well to simply come out with a one liner saying that all is great. Nothing is ever like that. That's why IMO I don't believe your statement is true.

Okay, just didnt want to waffle on how great it is. Yes we have had up and downs but still share everything. Talk and laugh together. Just live and enjoy life as a couple. Maybe we are just lucky.

Look it's CHILDREN that feck up a good marriage. I love ours to bits, but 90% of all problems are created by differences in dealing with stroppy teenagers.
