What are they and what is the difference and when do they apply? I Read an article today in the paper about a man who died from gun shot wounds and they are waiting for the results from the post mortem confused

isnt autopsy just the american word for a post mortem?

What he said, they're exactly the same procedure, 'post mortem' is derived from Latin whereas 'autopsy' is derived from Greek.
