Hello all,

so apparantly there are a shortage of books for the boys and girls out in Afghanistan,

I'm not asking people to support the war, just send books out to some people who might want to take their minds off things,

"The address for the books (and magazines)

REV PETER SCOTT
CHAPLAIN
CDO LOG REGIMENT
ROYAL MARINES
BASTION
BFPO 792

No mention on the box of Afghanistan for security reasons......

And I think there is a cheap rate for BFPO mail"

so feel free to send whatever you have, I'm pretty sure it will be appreciated.

If this breaks some Pistonheads rule and I get binned, I'm sorry in advance!

Nice one. A help for Heroes calendar is coming out in the near future, get out there and buy them when you see them. Sadly it features some at least one troop who allowed his picture to be taken, but has now been killed.

The things I'm being asked for are deodorant, shower gel and jazz mags. Books aren't that hard to come by.

Nice idea though.

Well, the request came from the rev above, so, just passing it on - you can obviously send other things but, he's asked for books and mags that he can hand out to peeps.

Oh, and liquor.

I remember back in the early days of Iraq sending a mate a bottle of Listerine.... Listerine removed, vodka poured in, drop of food colouring, sorted.

So some deodorant, toothpaste, bongo mags and what else? I'll chuck some extra stuff in my trolley. That's pretty much a normal shop for me actually.

Oh, I'm not knocking it, like I said, it's a nice idea. I've just known a lot of Padres in my time and while their hearts are in the right place, their sensibilites might not allow them to ask for the stuff the guys really want/need. Like jazz mags.

Doh, I thought you were planning to send porn to Afghan children... a sure fire way to get the Taliban really mad!

Erm... wink

Yes, I know, but it's not exactly uncommon knowledge that that's one the bases.

Anyway, I've got some books kicking around the I've already read, plus some recent editions of Empire magazine if anyone reckons they'd be appreciated (the mags I mean)

I'll bung it around work as well. Given we're a veterans' charity, I'm sure there'll be a fair bit more forthcoming.

I did think the same when I read 'boys and girls in Afghanistan'.

(Though I suppose some of the troops are just 'boys and girls')
