The way I see it, is that any past 'crime' my ancestors committed should simply be forgotten about.

Past crimes others ancestors/nationals etc did are reprehensible and should be apologised for.

I'm sorry for our countrys misconduct in the war.

I was just speaking about Germans, Swiss, and Austrians only yesterday (mainly about languages and different German dialects in these countries, even though it's German and is the same written language. Hi German it's called) and how people of a certain age still feel ashamed of what happened in WWII.

She said people of around 45/50 upwards are very ashamed about it and didn't like to discuss it with other Europeans.

People of 45/50 may have had parents directly affected by the war - disabilities, traumatic stress etc, so I'd say it was fair that it was still a fairly sore point.
