I've just been watching BBC news and if I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't have believed it. They devoted more than 10 minutes to a story about a woman who transferred money online to the wrong person's account and can't get it back.
They are making the banks out to be at fault - IT'S YOUR FAULT LOVE. YOU TRANSFERRED IT GO THE WRONG ACCOUNT BECAUSE YOU ARE A CARELESS SPANNER. YOU GET AT LEAST TWO OPPORTUNITIES TO CHECK WHERE YOU ARE SENDING MONEY TO YOU STUPID BINT.

king numpties take responsibility for their actions. They're even blaming the banks for not making it easy enough to delete the details of previous payees from your online account. Give me a break.

I saw this as well. The thing I didnt understand was that she said it was sent by mistake to someone who she had paid previously. She complained that the bank would not remove these old accounts.
She then also said the bank would not give her the details of the person the money went to... now, if she has paid them before, why does she need the details from the bank? Surely she would know who this person was if she had sent them money previously?!

Agreed. She's paid them before FFS. Is she really this thick-it's either a company or a person either of which you should know! Unless it's the local drug dealer/pimp entering the electronic age. That was the most worrying part. Hope she doesn't transfer my money to a random account next time I ring up my bank for a transfer. No, wait I always use internet banking so that I know where the money is going because I check everything before pressing Submit. Oh, hang on 
got online payments to friends and the like, as i might need them again, the payments are still there

love how the actual story is being overlooked, if you make a mistake (no need for the spannerisms) you cant get your money back. Imagine you call your local council or anyone else to set up a standing order and they incorrectly give you the sort or account code, an easy mistake that does happen. You set it up in good faith you then continue to pay but you havent actually paid the correct account, you are still liable but are not entitled to get your money back.
Its a loophole in the banking code of practice, if you can prove a genuine mistake you should be able to get the money back but obviously it would require adequate controls

...but she wasn't given the wrong information; through her own lack of care for her finances she managed to bypass all the banks nob-end protection systems and pay money to the wrong person. The end result is the same but the journey is a whole lot different.
The only thing in the banking code of practice that needs to change is the requirement to give planks bank accounts with online access. Surely her parent/guardian should have responsibility for her finances.

. We all make mistakes sometimes, some of us even get married ffs. But there are people that deal with it and people that blame everyone else for it. She is clearly the latter.
She's probably been scammed by a Nigerian and she's made up this cock and bull story to get her money back!
Imagine if some bloke bought a car off you, transferred the money across and got the money refunded the next day and when questioned says he paid you in cash! It could happen with a stretch of the imagination.
Anyway, PH is the 'Dave' of the internet - the home of witty banter and a mine of useful info. Equality and logic is not always present
