How to defeat Al Qaeda?

If they are just another terrorist group like the IRA, PLO, etc then the campaign will look something like this:

1) take lots of casualties in initial terrorist atrocities
2) open war against the terrorist 'footsoldiers'
3) terrorist leaders die of old age or by attrition
4) negotiation with second generation terrorist leaders
5) political settlement
6) splinter group mopping up (real IRA, hamas, etc)

Anybody see it any different with AQ?

Yes.

I don't think we can defeat them as such.

I think the best we can hope for is to keep thwarting their operations and attempting to break up the networks / cells, but we'll never fully defeat them altogether.

Nor will a political / diplomatic solution be reached either, Al Qaeda are way too radical and extreme for that.

I also don't think AQ are comparable to the likes of the IRA, if for no other reason than the fact that AQ and their ilk are happy to kill themselves for the cause. To my knowledge, the IRA didn't have any suicide bombers.

Have Al Qaeda done anything of late? As Afghanistan isn't Al Qaeda, very different thing.

So I guess they must be either dormant or not bothering doing anything.

Arab society has a value similar to kudos or respect the name of which I can't remember right now. At the moment everything that has been done to try and defeat Al Qaeda has done nothing to address this and for the most part only boosted their standing among arabs. If you want to defeat them you need to make them look bad to arabs, not to westerners. You need to make them lose their standing amongst the other arab nations. If I were a military leader right now I would be hiring arabs and experts in arabic society.
