Ahoy! I'm new to Ebay. I bought this item using paypal. Today I received it and plugged it into test it and one of the buttons is firing off repeatedly. So it's a faulty controller. I messaged the seller telling him I had a problem with it and I was not satisfied.

This afternoon I received this reply:

"hi,no problem, send the item back to me and i will refund the amount asap,im really sorry to hear theres a problem and have your best intensions to make good, pls reply asap, best wishes"

So it sounds like a good result. How do I do this as I don't want to send him the controller, then not receive my money so I could end up out of pocket from purchasing + shipping. While he ends up with money + controller he can sell again. What's my play? Ask him to send me the money before, or ask him to send me half and then the other half on receipt of goods. What's the standard practice here?

Thanks for the help.

Send it recorded, so he signs for it and proves you sent it back to him. I think.

Did you pay via PayPal? Raise a dispute and/or chargeback with them to make it official and follow their guidelines. It'll most likely be a case of sending the faulty item back using recorded delivery. At the end of the day you are in the best position under eBay and PayPal regulations; you're a buyer!

I paid via paypal. So is the best line to just reply tonight telling him i'll send the package recorded and then he can compensate me. Or should I tell him i'd like to go through the paypal process so it's official?

I'm not overly bothered about £7, just it's the principle and it's annoying as I was looking at a similar time which looked in great condition and was slightly more but I opted for his item.

You bought a used xbox controller and you're worried about a broken button???

I'd be more worried about all the gak and skin inside it if my controllers are anything to go by, I don't mind a bit of my mates gak in my controllers as I know they don't have any virulent skin conditions or anything, eughh!!

Don't worry, everything can be cleaned. I didn't really have any other options to buy a brand new/sealed one considering the age of it. I saw one but it ended up going for about £14. But back to the situation in hand......(or out wink)

ask him to confirm that he will also refund your postage both ways. Otherwise you end up out of pocket.

I had this with an item which was described as perfect working condition, but was obviously knackered. Initially offered to refund but when I asked to confirm postage refunds he told me to keep it and refunded some of my costs. It'll go back up as spares (its a camera) but I'm better off than I would have been returning it.

I don't mind paying the postage myself, I know i'm probably a bit dumb about it - but he has been fairly decent about the whole thing up till now. If I get majority of my money back i'm fine. I just don't want to be scammed. So shall I say i'd like to make it official or just agree to send him it and he'll send me money on receipt?

Sometimes I think PH is Ebay's help department.

Proves how toilet eBay had become...

or does it prove how popular and friendly PH is?!

Well i'm new to all this. I've thought this through. I will allow him to send me the money prior to me shipping it. Alternatively, I use paypal claims to make it official then send.

His reply was this: "the way i have always done it is you send the item back and i will check it is faulty and if so you will recive a refund no problem". Which leaves me in the problem of if he receives it and says there's no fault what am I to do? frown I think I should just make a claim through paypal.

133, 92% - you can check him out in my OP as I put a link to the advert. He only has one negative feedback response and it was just a lateness thing. He has seemed genuine up till then but I don't know if it's good to this unofficially.

Don't forget to check their star ratings too - actually this one looks ok.

His reply to the negative feedback would have ensured I never dealt with him though.

Yeah, well I didn't look that close but i'm learning the way of ebay. But maybe he was just upset at the time and decided to rip into someone (assuming the story is true.) I can't even be bothered to think about it for £7 any more, it's not worth it. So what's the verdict: pay pal claim or just send it and rely on good faith? I haven't left feedback yet so I always have that weapon.

Ask him to confirm he'll pay the postage then send it recorded delivery. I wouldn't give a credit back until I had the goods back - how does he know you'll send it. For all he knows you might be trying to scam him.

Over 99% of ebay transactions are sound - don't get put off by all the doom & gloom messages.

I have offered to go through pay pal and make it official but he doesn't want to from the looks of it. I'll ask if he'll pay postage/be willing to contribute towards it. Either way, i'll send it to him. I can see why he's less inclined to trust me considering I have only bought 1 other item. If I lose the item + the money it'll be a story for the kids wink
