Just had a look on a few of the DIY stores for some timber, just to use for stud work, so go to wickes, couple of lengths of 2x4 should do, as its the standard size for stud work....They dont sell 2x4 anymore
its
Size: 38 x 89mm x 2.4mm

WTF, thats 1.5"x3.5", who has changed this measurment? Screw this new age hippy st measurments, I have always worked in the following methods
Wood Inches and feet, 2x4 length of timber, or 4x8 sheet of ply
Metal MM 40x80 box section
Horse track is like 3 1/2 Furlongs not something silly like 0.2 miles

What happened to the 2x4, just checked a sheet of plywood, should be 4 foot by 8 foot,
No Wickes has it at 3.5 foot near as dammit by just over 8 foot, what goes into a shop and ask for
6 lengths of 38 x 89 and 2 sheets of 2440 x 1220

Utters s, is 6 lengths of 2 be 4 and 2 sheets of 4 be 8, I wasnt consulted on this, infact actually I am going to measure the 4x8 sheets we get in for the floors...... 4 by fking 8, and its bettter ply, and its cheaper

What the fk is that, some sort of scam? Measure up to build a frame, figure out what you need, only to find out you have come up short because these s have changed the measurements?

"Oh I should need four, 4x8 sheets to do this.......`2 hours later`......S!!!! I need another fking sheet, to fit into this piddly little stting gap, fk YOU DIY COMPANY, fk YOU! I now have to go and spend more arsing money for changing your stting measurements you complete tts"

I bet aswell they have trained the staff to look confused when you ask for wood in inches and feet(giggity) making you look like a complete gammon slipper, then again if you did ask for it in inches and were given what they sell, shirley they cant do that.

fking donkey gobblers!

I think I have identified the problem here - you appear to be stuck in the distant past, where weird people thought that fiddling with fractions was simpler than a base 10 system. hehe

I know what you mean, it's a right pain in the arse with building. It would be easier if things were standardised - i.e. sheet products = 2400 x 1200 OR 2440 x 1220, not a mixture of the two. I got caught out with the structural ply for our place, ended up having to pay twice as much to have a sheet cut up at B&Q so I could get it in the car!

I am fully aware of the metric system, but if that were the case I would have 18 floz of beer please, you dont fk with standard measurements that have been around since the dawn of time, would will always be inches and feet, and pint will always be a pint, we will still measure horsetracks in furlongs, land in acres they should just off with there stting metric system, NASA tried using both it doesnt fking work, fk off!

Just count yourself lucky you're not in the States and trying to order a 2x4 - just wait to see what size you get...

fk the future, I fear change.

Sorry but it just isnt going to work, what the st around gangs going to do on a raid, I can imagine it now
"Hello good sir, are we raiding said rival gang today?"
"Ah yes, we are, I will be using this 800x30 mill chain, how about you"
"Ahhh good choice, well I will be swinging in with the trusty old lump of 38x85 with some 150mil nails sticking out the end"
"Good show, onward?"
"Yes, pip pip"

fk off! Should be
"You got yo nine"
"I got my nine....What you got"
"2x4"
"coo'"

Go into the butchers abd ask for 305mm of hard Italian sausage? I dont fking think so!

B&Q is home to the desperate and ill informed. It is my refuge for all those 8.30pm "oh fk" moments that cost horrendously.

1 sheet of 18mm exterior grade WBP... £34 yikes in fact thinking on it that's almost 3 times what I paid for the rest of it. The walnut for my kitchen from them is > £4k compared to £1.2k from a "proper" supplier!

I'm a recent graduate and I work in construction, so I'm quite use to the metric system, but we still measure timber in the old ways. Just go to Travis Perkins or a decent builders merchant for your timbers and it'll be sold as metric but will be marked in both languages.

That I dont mind, as long as I am asking for a 2x4 and get a 2x4 not some st measurments, some has thought up

your problem as mentioned by a previous poster is that the timber hasn't changed, planed timber was always undersize (it started at 2X4 before planing, get rough sawn and it will still be 2X4!) and 8X4 boards haven't changed shape at all. they are now 8.005 ft by 4.00025 ft. pretty much as they always were.

So as it goes the material is still supplied in exactly the same fashion as it always has and you can still ask for it in old language and most people will still understand what you need.

Imperial is dead and so it should be. Base 10 is logical, imperial is not.

10 is divisible by 1, 2, 5, 10
12 is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 scratchchin

powers of 2 of an inch vs mm? Dead easy to handle with a few minutes practice.

We really should count in base 8, 12 or 16.

Not in some pubs, but honest ones give you a full 20 Flozzes.

To the OP:
Go to a proper wood merchant it's likely cheaper, full size and, if it won't go on the back of your bike they'll deliver Thursday a.m. or p.m. Not, 'Thursday mate, can't say when'.
