Dfs sofas - change of mind
Discussion
I ordered a DFS sofa with the misses a while ago and we put down a deposit. Our needs have now changed and we need something different (a sofa bed not a corner lounge). I want to cancel and am content to lose my deposit but the lady at DFS says we cannot.
Has anybody had a similar experience and did you manage to cancel?

I'd be interested in them explaining why you can't cancel - surely that's the point of the deposit - to cover their losses in the event you don't go through with it.
DFS are very 'hard sell'. At the end of the day they can't force you to accept delivery of the original order. Try again with them. They might be more helpful if they have something else in their range that would suit you, but at the end of the day if you are willing to forfeit your deposit there's not much else they can do, IMO.
What does it say about cancelling on the back of your order copy?

Wasa the suite made to order, sometimes this is why they take several weeks to deliver because they make them as the orders come in (not sure if DFS do this but I know some sofa places do) If enough time has lapsed the sofa may be ready.
I not saying they are right but I'm just wondering if this is a possible reason.

How long ago did you order it? And what was the given delivery time? The reality will depend on the terms of the contract but if it is taking an extraordinary amount of time to be delivered you may be able to cancel on the grounds of their non-completion of the order.
Failing that you may need to ensure that they are not ot ofpocket, hich if they have paid to hav a sofa made for you, and then shipped half way around the world they will be!

After hearing this and looking for a new Sofa, glad I don't look at DFS. besides I heard too many bad things from freinds and family and on TV abotu them.
i wouldnt see this as a negative not to buy.. i mean look at it logically, would you go into your local garage, fill up then get to the till and change your mind - then blame the garage?I ordered a corner sofa from them for my conservatory (and it is very good for what it is) and I distinctly remember when doing this over the phone they were constantly banging on about not being able to cancel as soon as they pressed the order button.
Never had any intention of cancelling so didn't read the contract but they claim to make to order so it might be difficult to back out now.......

The fault in your comparison is that the OP has not taken delivery of his sofa.I'd say that firstly it comes down to what the contract says - I'd be surprised if there isn't something about 'your right to cancel'. It must also be reasonable.
Secondly, DFS will be able to sell the sofa as a display model and still make a profit on it - they will not make an actual loss on the deal, only less profit than they thought - and of course they have your deposit to keep as well. You could also commit to buy another DFS sofa and pay a new deposit if that cheers them up. I would try explaining these points nicely to them and see if they're going to be reasonable about it or not. For example, if someone orders a sofa from them but dies before delivery, do they make the widow/widower/estate pay for it?

I guess it depends on how far you want to take it.
We bought a sofa from DFS, as I understood it they state a 12 week delivery as they wait until there is sufficient demand for the model then send off for a batch to be made. If its been several weeks you can guarantee the sofa will be being made. Sure you have consumer rights for cancelling an order but does this not change if the goods are made to order? This may be what it hinges on.
I guess they assume with a large purchase like a sofa you will have made the decision after much deliberation and not change your mind!
Are they refusing to allow you to cancel? Or are they saying you have to pay £££'s?
Just for the records...
ours took exactly 12 weeks and are perfectly happy with it.
