What grammar rules do we need to follow?

As per the title, what rules do we need to follow, remember and teach?

(I'm no grammar expert here so I'll not start with any suggestions)

This isn't a grammar problem so much as a thicko problem, however it is one that is made by a frighteningly large number of people. I refer of course to the your vs you're scenario.

- Understand the proper usage of the word you're. It is a contraction, or a combination of, the words you and are. Other examples of contractions include doesn't, they're, and can't.

• "You're a good friend." ("YOU ARE a good friend.")
• "I don't know what you're talking about." ("I don't know what YOU ARE talking about.")

- Understand the proper usage of the word your. The word your is the possessive form of you, referring to something that a person has, or something that belongs to the person in discussion [or, the person you are talking to].

• "Is your stomach growling?"
• "Your book is on the table."

What a weird thread! We need to follow ALL rules of grammar, otherwise language loses it's meaning. Rules which we all follow removes (most of) the ambiguity which would be introduced without these conventions.

What exactly do you want from the thread? I think there's too much to learn in the English language to convey in a thread on a car forum, so the best you're going to get will be people moaning about common mistakes noted elsewhere on the site.

I still think it's a silly question to ask 'Which rules do we need to follow' as the answer is obviously 'all of them'.

I don't get that site. The apostrophication looks right to me! What's wrong with That's, Hilary's. Miller's. Today's ?? Have I missed something?

That's how I read it. Apostrophe vs single quote vs double quote etc.

On a similar subject, can we bring back the use of hyphens please? They seem to be dying an undeserved death despite being useful.
