Just on for a moan and to see if this happens to anyone else. I am a smoker of 27, and twice now i have been refused the sale of the thing that i regard as my freind the marlboro red, all because some shops specify that if you look under 25 they have to ask for ID. Now before people come on and tell me that it's a filthy habbit and that i should be thankfull for somone trying to stear me in the correct path, or that i should carry ID, I'm just looking to see if it's just me or do other people ever get this, also why if the legal age to purchase cigarettes and alcohol is 18, why do they set the ID age limit at 25?

On both occasions it has been early morning on a week day, this meaning that i have been dressed in a suit and arrived in my car which has been visable to the shop assistant, surely a brain cell would turn on and put all these factors together and think, "ok he's obviously not a school boy thats thrown on a suit and stolen his dads car just to get a fix"

Okay so i could carry ID or give up the habbit that is one day going to get me, or i could just be very flattered that people think i look younger than i am and leave with a smile but no, I'AM 27!!! JUST GIVE ME MY DAMN FAGS!!!!

i can understand your frustration dude! i dont smoke, never have done so i cant really think how it would feel not to be able to get your beloved 'reds'.

frustrates alot of people with both beer and fags, with the ID but most places i go they seem to use some common sense and not bother with the ID if your blatently 18+
just seems like the arsey type feel like pissing on your day :/

Yeah, I got ID'd buying a bottle of brandy for my grandma at Tesco. It was in the morning before work and I didn't have my wallet on me. No biggie, just got my mum to get it. Ff I ever need to buy booze I always take some ID with me, it's not too hard.

I cannot understand it at all.

Supermarkets spend millions upon millions of pounds on advertising, new initiatives, laying the aisles out in the best possible way to get you to part with money, then they are quite prepared to pee you off by not serving you fags when it is quite evident that you are over the legal age to buy them.

It just goes to show what they really think of you and your custom. Boycott this shop, forever.

Thanks for your comments, i get the point that they are trying to stop the underagers from buying things that they shouldn't be, but lets face it, if someone underage wants to buy something of the sorts they would go somewhere easy to get it, i certainly did, also i've never been rejected from a club or pub because i looked too young whether that was the case or not. it's bloody annoying that some of these people really do just want to piss on your day!!

Oh, I understand your anger with the petrol station issue. I pull into a petrol station in an Audi A4, park right outside the cashier's office, go to the window (it was late at night) and ask for a packet of cigarettes (for my mother, I don't smoke) and the git asks me for I.D... I've just turned up in a car FFS, and not even a crummy hatchback that 99.9% of 17 year olds would drive, but a proper 4 door saloon. I actually spent 10 minutes arguing with the guy, constantly asking why somebody under the age to buy cigarettes A) Drive, B) Drive a "grown up" car, C) Spend time actually arguing. In the end, he gave up and served me... The absoutely best bit was I was 17 at the time!

I've only been carded maybe Three times in my life, and I've been buying alcohols and cigarettes (for mother) since I was about 15. I was seriously looking forward to using my I.D after my 18th, went to a supermarket, got booze, went to the checkout with a cheesy grin, waiting for the "I.D Sir?" line and nothing .

the supermarket would quite happily sell fags and booze to 5 year olds, the government would really rather they didnt and inflict draconian fines on the company and the individual operators if they do so. They send out test purchasers to entrap cashiers into doing just this.

Its not the supermarkets fault, theyre just protecting themselves and their staff. Massive fine (thousands for the cashier and theyd get sacked and risk the stores licence along with a fine) and a criminal record or ps off somebody wanting to spend a fiver on some fags? Easy choice to make really.

Personally it doesn't bother me. I very rarely find myself without ID and when I pop into Morrisons for ID it only takes a few seconds to open my wallet and let the cashier see.

Christmas crackers are now an 18+ sale where I work, as are children's cutlery sets designed not to cause injury to children... and yet both are 18+ restricted sales!

So in comparison, don't mind getting ID'd for booze... I can see the genuine benefit, unlike the dangerous Christmas cracker under 18 ban!

Understandable. But I have heard of women in their 30s being asked. NO woman in her thirties can be confused with a child.

some cashiers are just a bit thick, thats why theyre spending their lives sitting on a till after all. With women its quite hard to tell at times, a 17 year old covered in slap can quite easily pass for a lot older and vice versa.

Unfortunately it is down to the prosecutions that the big supermarkets have faced for selling to under age kids, mostly from sting operations from Trading Standards. Tesco I believe were threatened with the loss of their licence for one more infringement at one of their south London stores. It has forced them to mandate their staff to ask for ID in all situations, some of the more sensible employees don't ask pensioners etc. But some of them do, I have not had it happen to me yet, but when it does I will be boycotting them for gross stupidity

Sticky buns are now also on the restricted list in our local tesco for reasons I cant begin to understand. I did the self service checkout and they came up as a restricted item and had to be approved by a supervisor.

Any suggestions on what you could possibly do with a sticky bun for them to have to be restricted to over 18's ?
