Does anyone here volunteer with SJA or similar?

They are advertising for volunteers in my area, but I'd be disappointed if I didn't actually get to support any events and ended up at Girl Guide meetings.

Thanks smile

I did it for a year. It's good if you want to learn first aid and get your First aid at work cert' etc.

To be honest there are quite a few odd balls at all SJA factions. Think it as a place where train spotters, mis fits, men who are 50 and who live with their mothers, 40 year old virgins, men who look like pedo's (I said look like) and people who get power hungry when they become "leaders" end up. hehe

I'd join the Red Cross, much more normal.

When I did my induction you have to listen to them drone on and you get to repeat the SJA code, I nearly lost when they said "we will be kind to all animals" biglaugh

Give it a go.

(I was none of the above before anyone asks)

Another option would be to join a SAR or Mountain Rescue team. They will train you up to paramedic equivalent (advanced cacare) if you want to go down the medical route. Most teams get involved in supporting local events as fund-raising opportunities.

Where do you live, I'll tell you who your local team is?

Noooo, Rach is leaving Yorkshire frown

But you are well fit (or so I heard)

Seriously, a friend of mine is in the St.John's and he is, how can I put this, er, larger than average. Not a lardwagon but definitely well upholstered. He manages fine.

tongue out thanks for the compliment. I WILL start running again *trots off for OS map of my new area*

I couldn't get a job in Yorkshire, but I have more work than I can fit into a week down Sarrf. Bit of a shame seeing as I'd only just moved back but I'm sure the Thames Valley guys will keep an eye on me.
The lady I'm going to house share with seems like a good laugh, likes a drink and MotoGP!

Here you go...http://www.sebev.co.uk/home.asp

Not sure what the requirements are for SAR teams but for MR it is typically be fit (The degree of fitness is proportional to how hilly the area is, which I suspect in SAR terms is able to wander about carrying your call out kit - med pack, thermal blanket, etc. for a couple of hours) Be able to read a map, and that's about it - the rest they'll teach you.

Typically you'll get called out to despondents who've wandered off to kill themselves, flood victims, med cover for events, missing persons, assisting police with body searches, people who've broken a limb in a remote area.

They tend to be less beardy than StA or Red Cross.

Actually regarding my observations about the type of male that frequents St John I am reminded of an equally similair trait in HATO's (Highways agency wombles) hehe

Both of the chaps I met were members of SJA. (and had beards)

I remember being at the banger racing while in SJA and as soon as a car went over the SJA dorks all clambered onto the track and were all over the car like ants, "Quick, support his neck" "Dont move you may get brain damage" (er, banger drivers!) " Get the paramedic, doctor, get MagPas helicopter!" biglaugh
The drivers hated these guys, but health and saftey rules meant they were a requirement.

Same as (some) HATO's. Bit of bumper on the road quick shut the whole of the western side of the M25 quick! "Barry, call my mum. I may be late for dinner. Tell her not wait up" rofl

sorry went on a bit of a fking rant then.

Found them "Sometimes we do it well and sometimes we don’t. Never mind ......."

I really miss my paramedic friend who died earlier this year, they have such a wicked, unique sense of humor.

I'll be reading now....
