A third way?

So, you've realised that life's too short/you only get one life.

You've had enough of the 9-5 (or 8-6 or 7-7 or worse)

But you certainly don't want to engage with the benefits system.

And you haven't just won the lottery.


How do you make the most of your short stint of 'being alive' without kow-towing to the man?

Is there a third way? (being a tramp doesn't count; the soluton needs to be enjoyable!)

I am in the process of doing something.

Sold everything and buggering off travelling. When I get back I will work for a few months temping to generate funds to go somewhere else.

Maybe I will find my place in life where I will be happy, or maybe I will find happiness in travelling. Who knows!

Selling everything is not a very sustainable exercise though (hard to replicate!)

And once it has run out, you're back to working for the man.

Sounds like an elongated holiday rather than lifelong plan.

if you had land with access to fresh water and can grow/hunt food then you have a decent chance. hopefully somewhere foreign where you can have an easy life teaching or translating english.

Well my "lifelong plan" is just that. Yes may be working for the man for a period of time to generate enough funds again to go somewhere else, but that going somewhere may just reveal the one thing that i find happiness in doing.

I sure as hell aint happy here in my 9-5 office job!

Other than winning the lottery or something like that I think you will always have to do at least a small amount of kow-towing at some point.

Join foreign legion
Leave foreign legion with a new identity
Become a hitman...

I'd be interested to know how "a few months temping" pays enough to buy sufficient food and shelter in a high cost economy like the UK and leave enough to save up for escaping for any significant period.

I wonder just how many people absolutely detest the life we live?

It would be interesting to know how stress and happiness levels compare between 'westerners' and those inhabitants of our planet who live entirely different lifestyles.

Cut all your unnecessary expenses. By unnecessary, I mean things like Sky, 50mb broadband, gym membership, Tesco Finest, eating out, nice wines, Starbucks coffees... never buy new albums/games/DVDs (rent, borrow or shop from the bargain bin), try shop's own brand food (yes, it's not as nice but you're saving a lot), shop at Matalan not M&S, etc. When you cull the unnecessary, you'll find out how cheap it is to live.

Oh, yeah, get rid of the fancy car. If you want to enjoy motoring, there are a whole host of cheaper options.

If you have problems doing so, tell me everything you've spent money on in the last month and I'll tell you what to stop spending money on.

Quite easily if you work it right really, depends what field of work you are in.

6 months work will more than cover things
Depends if you need a permanent place to stay and on certain circumstances. Me personally I have a friend who will always have a spare room that he wont "rent out" but when i am back will let me crash there for a cheap "mates rate".

Take my trip planned.... £360.00 return flights..... I have budgeted £600p/month but can live on MUCH less than that when out there. i will also be getting work while I am away so I daresay i will return with a fair wack of my budget still intact.

I have no unnecessary out goings. Shop at places like "Lidl" and "officers club" and not buying anything unnecessary

you don't need a huge income to live comfortably and save a lot of money quickly

a friend of a friend does geosurveys for the likes of the water board etc. he went on a jolly to cambodia and ended up staying there for well over a year as his skills were in huge demand from all the NGO's over there.

a job that you could pick up would allow the best lifestyle -artist etc.
