Hiring/Buying home gym equipment

Ive done some searches - it looks expensive.........

around 20 quid per week for a running machine and the same for a rowing machine

does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm in the Hampshire/Surrey area........(Guildford ish)

well - for a short term goal its cheaper than buying and not using.

Also - it avoids servicing costs etc etc

We are looking for high end - gym standard equipment

the Concept II is the bks I believe. I used to use them when I was rowing properly for not getting wet training.

Model D looks to be around 1k.........and Model E 1200k........so it probably will be more cost efficient to buy - which is what I took the original 'why would you bother?' comment.

If its buying versus renting - then thats one question

if its, why have it in your house and not go to a gym....well I think thats fairly obvious! I'm too busy for the gym....and i'm training for a Marathon.

So running outside - (which I do a lot) still isn't quite enough for some other areas i'm working on.

Hence the running machine in doors too!

Simple. Avoid the chains that are packed full of egos and find a small gym. I pay £21 a month to have a well equipped gym, 12.5 metre pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna at my disposal, and I have the place to myself most evenings. 1 mile up the road too with ample private parking too.

I appreciate that I don't have the space, money or frankly the will to want my own gym at home like some people may, but kitting out a room with a choice of decent equipment (as opposed to a £300 running machine and a crappy weights bench..) is mega expensive even if you rent compared to a membership at the right gym where everything is supplied, maintained and someone elses asset.

brilliant. Luckily I can think for myself, have made a decision based on the fact I work very long hours and so need the gym in the house, and do want to rent/buy some good gym equipment. Hey, I can afford it, and have a big enough house.

so - that being said.

Does anyone have any advice or better still, recommendations on where to get the equipment from?

I used to row at a reasonable level, and whilst the concept 2 is the daddy of erg's, don't discount the water rower...

Less impact at the catch, and very smooth, also very adjustable by changing the water level.

Not sure if they still do, but a few years ago I had a demo for 2 months for free, can't remember if that was through the shop or the manufacturer though...

Might be worth considering?

I think we got our second hand Precor stuff from these people. We picked up a reconditioned 546 cross trainer for ~£500 and this place seems to have them at the same price. They also do treadmills and other pieces of kit if you fancy. For what it's worth, we've had no issues with the cross trainer, and it's worked faultlessly for the last year.

I was merely trying to offer an objective parallel. By your own admission 'it looks expensive', and i'd say that £160 a month for just two pieces of equipment, one of which you can do for free by exiting your front door, is an awful lot of money, regardless of if you can afford it or not, next to any gym membership.

I have a water rower, and it's really nice. Sounds great when you are using it and doesn't look like it fell off a scaffolders lorry, which makes a difference when you have it in your home.

Don't rent though, the second hand market on ebay for Water Rowers and Concept II's is extremely strong, you won't lose much money when you sell it on after it has been sat doing nothing for 4 months

fair enough BazKing - it just always make me laugh when someone posts a thread asking a direct question and get loads of different pieces of advice!

Technogym for running and other cardio, I know they rent to gym's but ot sure if they'll rent to mere mortals. Top spec stuff though.
