Can anyone help? A colleague at work has been asked to produce an "aunt Sally". None of us in the department have a clue what this means but we're pretty sure it has nothing to do with conception..

A google suggests it is some kind of decoy to attract criticism while diverting attention away from the real problem, but this doesn't really seem to fit the project.

Is there any other meaning for an "aunt Sally"? Is it some new business buzzword? Does it have anything to do with setting new paradigms when the sky is blue?

Please help!

you get the idea biggrin

As for the Wurzel Gummage connection, yes Aunt Sally was made of wood and was the thing you throw the sticks at.

Errrm, why the rofl ??

Go to any rural Oxfordshire / Berkshire pubs and there is bound to be a place to play it in the garden.

Ahh, it's something to do with business. Colleague almost certainly has not been asked to organise an outdoor sporting event or build straw characters from classic worzel gummidge, hence the rofl.

Anyway, at the moment our best guess is its a "straw man proposal", in other words, it's a buzzword. Linky below:

I quite fancied Aunt Sally. (una Stubbs?)

But then I saw Mr Gummages many appendages.

Never heard Aunt Sally as a businessspeak term before, but I suppose it makes sense in that you throw metaphorical sticks at it?

I always called that "playing Devil's Advocate", but I guess that term is too old and not trendy enough for some consultant somewhere, who's probably charged someone a fortune for the 'Aunt Sally problem solving and solution viability testing system' wink

My Aunt Sally is dead.
So is her husband, Uncle Bob.

Never really liked either of them anyway.

As you were with your banal management speak. smile

Ahhhh...

In all fairness you didn't actually say what kind of work you were in. Had you worked for a carpentry firm then my answer would probably have made sense biggrin

An Aunt Sally is a sacrificial diversion.

Like running a project you know will never deliver but the mere fact you are doing it unnerves the competition, or makes the business more saleable or whatever.

At least that's my understanding...

Urban dictionary saves the day:

1. Aunt Sally

A person who wears ridiculous amounts of blusher and needs to check the mirror before leaving the house.
Looks like Worzel Gummidge Aunt Sally

When I was at school, in the 60's, "Aunt Sally" was the cane.

An aunt sally is a proposal in a loose form but with enough detail that can generate discussion and direct strategies to get to a firmer more agreed proposal to take forward.

You chuck sticks at it because you basically pull it to bits to find out what's worth pursuing.

Think of it as a dumby (I was being dumb not ironic but retrospectively why not, dummy) run through before commiting to something.

Personally I would produce the game.

Explain to him if he would like not to be a tt and use English to communicate, then things will run a lot smoother.
