Asking FIL 'hand in marriage' protocol

OK, I'm in a fix.

I finally plucked up the courage to ask my GF to marry me, so though I would follow old fashioned protocol and ask the prospective FIL for his blessing.

Not wanting to go too crazy (he's quite a modern guy really so not sure if he goes in for this sort of thing), I thought I would call him rather than dropping by.

Now, being half foxed and a bit nervous, I made a bit of a hash of it and sort of blurted out what I meant to say with eloquence.

He was a right miserable fker about it all. Didn't say yes, didn't say no.

You would have thought he would be happy for us? No such chance, the miserable old git.

Oh, and by the way, she loves it up the OXO tower.

There's your first mistake, you should have turned up on doorstep bearing alcoholic gifts.

My FIL didn't actually say yes either, but the smile and handshake I took to imply assent.
