HADRON collider question

OK, I saw a program on discovery channel, it was probably a repeat but anyways. It was talking about the Cern Hadron collider and how, when they repair it and get it running, it will collide particles at near the speed of light.

When these particles collide the scientists hope to separate sub-atomic particles that 'live' within these hypothetical sub-dimensions in which gravity is suppose to exist strongly.

This process has the result of creating VERY strong gravity fields and the possiblity of creating a mini-black hole at the rate of 1 per second !!!


NOW...I thihk its been discussed previously but wanted to start a new thread..... WHAT THE FOOK HAPPENS WHEN ONE OF THESE MINI-BLACK HOLES HAS THE CHANCE TO GATHER MORE 'MATERIAL' AND GROW ??

(maybe from a leak in the system, from maybe the black hole being created too close to the edge of the container, maybe from a catasrophic failure which releases them into the atmosphere....>insert many other possibilities here< )

The program spent about 1 minute decribing that if one of these black holes got hold of material then it will grow and not 'evaporate' according to Hawking's theory. And it will grow and envelop the earth at a staggering rate.


I'm not a phyics scientist but I sure hope they know what they are doing !!!!



There was a news story recently about the reason why the collider is broken and may never run.....that being future events are preventing it.... its all a bit sci-fi for me to understand but what are the current views of you guys?



My main issue, with limited understanding, is that if we create something with a srtong enough gravity field to creata ANY sort of black hole then what is to stop all the surrounding earth from being drawn through the collider casing and causing a total fracture of the system and releasing black holes into the earth?
Did I say that I have limited understanding on this subject!!!

Why don't you read a bit more about this, they have been splitting the atom for years, and guess what, no black hole, the planet has not been split apart and we are not all dead.

I think being ruled by alien lizard men would be a damn site better than what we have at the moment.

The extra mass the 'black hole' eats would be negligible, i thought these types of black holes would only exist for a very short time, it would need to eat a several suns worth of mass to become self-sustaining i think..

Well if it does happen, we're no great loss to the Universe are we. A contemptible species with very few redeeming features, with perhaps the exception of boobies.

They need to hurry up and start it! It could solve the artificial gravity problem in space... also with a stron enough gravitational field, you could mount one on top of a future spacecraft and have it pull itself into orbit insteat of get pushed like current methods dictate.

Benifit of this is that the propultion will work just as well in space! Allowws ing us to acceleraate closer and closer to the spead of light bringing the tau upto rediculous levels!!!

yeah but no but yeah but,....this discovery program was making it sound like the whole point of colliding these particles in the way they plan to is to specifically create mini-black holes and also find the 'higgs boson' particle (sp?).

If the existence of strong gravity fields exist in sub-dimensions then it will give them the explaination of why gravity is so weak in the normal 4D universe that we see here on earth.

I do feel I have to repeat that I could be talking total bolllox on all of this...its just from what I pick up from general interest and TV programs etc.

LHC is just the latest version of a particle collider, they have been doing this for 40 odd years.

So pretty much just the media hype and nothing else then?

Why not read new scientist or see if the HC has a website and put your mind at rest....

If it does go wrong and destroys everything its not like you will notice as it will be over pretty much straight away... if it works that way and is a secret government weapon of mass destruction under the guise of a science experiment.

Pretty much, many major scientific advances have caused this kind of hysteria, there were those who said the first atom bomb tests would start an unstoppable chain reaction that would destroy the planet.

My opinion is:
- If a self sustaining black hole is produced which is large enough to 'suck in' material from the earth surrounding the experiement then it will be so large and catestrophic that the entire solar system will also be drawn in inside a few secconds/milisecconds. I.e if this thing is going to kill you, it will be over so fast you won't realise it. Also, it's not like you're going to be leaving a family behind as wherever you're going, you're all going there together.

- The chances of the above happening are nil, or so close to nil as to be indistinguishable from nil for all intents and purposes.
