My ASDA experience
Discussion
I couldn't decide where this should go. I expect it will get moved to the right place.
A letter I'm sending to ASDA;
I placed an online order for groceries on 2nd of Oct. Included in this were 6 bottles of wine for £5 each. I received a confirmation email stating the time of delivery and the total cost (£71.03). Sure enough the delivery arrived at the appointed time on the 6th of October, no substitutions or missing items. After the driver left I noticed the cost on the delivery note was £95.01. The majority of the discrepancy was because the wine was now priced at £8.97 a bottle. I called your helpline and spoke to a helpful woman called Stacey. She confirmed that there was an error, according to her the particular store my delivery came from didn't run that offer. I found this a bit hard to believe as I had ordered the wine from ASDA ONLINE not any store so my location should make no difference. Rather than labour the point I agreed that I didn't want the wine at that price and I'd like to return it. I’d rather have kept the wine and been refunded the difference but this wasn’t an option. Stacey called me back later to say that she had contacted the store and they would call to arrange a collection.
Several days went past with no contact from the store. I called the helpline, again, to find out what was happening. Another helpful woman checked the notes and contacted the store again. This time she confirmed that she had spoken to Robert at the Ballyclare store and he would call me to arrange a collection. Some hours later Robert called and to fit my work schedule arranged for a collection on the 15th Oct. Unfortunately unlike deliveries he was unable to give a time slot on Friday just sometime that day.
Finally at about 3pm on the 15th Robert called to say he was in the area and was I at home. Ten minutes or so later he arrived and his colleague Peter collected my wine and told me my money would be refunded in 4 to 5 working days.
Today is Wednesday the 28th Oct. As yet no refund has appeared in my bank account.
In summary as of today;
I’ve made 2 telephone calls
Wasted most of a day
Lost £53.82 from my bank account
And have NO WINE to console myself with.
I only ever placed the order because I received a promotional email from Quidco to try the ASDA online experience. I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed it.
Regards,

P.S. Tesco would have given me my money back and let me keep the wine. The crazy fools.
Guess who I'll be shopping with in future?

I had a similar experience with Sainsbury's online. 6 bottles ordered at £3.99 each (half price offer). Turned up, and they had substituted the wine (same grape). I didn't check the cost (I trusted them), but the substitutes sheet said "you ordered 6 XXX @ £3.99 = £23.94. You got 6 YYYY - see receipt.
Started to quoff wine. Next day the Mrs check receipt. Wine was £6.99 a bottle. Bastids! I phoned the online people who apologised, and asked me to take the wine back myself.
ME: Er - I do online shopping so I don't have to go to the supermarket.
S: OK, they said we'll pick it up tomorrow.
ME: We're out tomorrow, why can't we keep it, and you refund the difference?
S: (laughing) oh we couldn't possibly do that.
ME: OK, I'm moving to Ocado - bye then.
Next day phone goes just before we're going out:
S: Hi it's Sainsbury's on Leamington, we're due to pick some wine up from you today.
ME: Er - no. Have you heard the story?
S: No.
I give them the whole story
S: That's ridiculous of them. You keep them wine, and we'll refund the difference.
Result! But we also moved to Ocado, which is completely fab, and cheaper than Sainsbury's was.

you drink sub £5 bottles of wine at your own peril.....
Actually wine has got cheaper again. Ten years ago £4 for a bottle of mid-week glug was the going rate. Then it became impossible to find anything drinkable under about £6.99. In the last year or so £3.99 wine has had a massive resurgence in both quantity and quality: mainly due to the BOGOFs and half-price promotions the supermarkets are having to do to get us to spend money in a recession. No the stuff won't be Meursault or Chateuneuf du Pape. It's usually a decent, honest quaffer that will accompany a mid-week evening meal and whilst nothing special will certainly be pleasant and complement the food.
Having said this drinking decent wine cheap does require some work as there are still some fairly rough examples around. For the most part cheap wine is simply inoffensive these days.
First ever Ocado delivery yesterday (until recently lived 100m from Waitrose!). I was stunned. You get an SMS telling you who the driver will be, what his registration is and if there are any substitutes.
Because the delivery comes from a central warehouse, and not the shop, they mostly prevent you buying stuff that won't be delivered.
The delivery came with a free copy of the Times, and some free chocolate.
The receipt tells you the use by dates of the goods.
It's simple stuff, but it's staggeringly way ahead of the competition.

I called the ironically named helpline again. The story is that the store had informed the online centre that the wine was returned and the refund was to be made. Linda at the South African call centre told me that her colleague had failed to follow on and make the refund. Linda was now going to get her supervisor to authorise the refund and it would be with me in 10 days (yes that's a 10).
Seems like the South Africans have repeatedly dropped the ball (if only their rugby team would do the same)
