I had a letter today from a company called Telogram Limited. They are working on behalf of another comapany called CapQuest Investments Ltd, (not sure I'm alllowed to mention names so if mods want to delete them then feel free)anyway, they were looking to update my details and if I didn't contact them by a certain day I would be "investigated". They sent me the letter so they must know where I live.

I called them and they put me through to CapQuest, the foreign woman at the other end said that I owed them £240 originally from Abbey.

I said do you mean the direct debit that was paid by the bank that I never paid back about 15 years ago? She said no it was in 1990, 9 years ago.

I think you'll find that's 19 years ago I argued. Back in those day I had a little alcohol problem and didn't pay my bills. Abbey never did chase me for it, maybe for a year or so. I still have an Abbey account.

My question is can these people ask for a payment of debt that is nearly 20 years old?

I have a top knotch credit score and this has me a little baffled. I even offered Abbey the money in 2001 when I bought this house but they weren't intersted in it.

They sound a little dodgy to me.

I thought that debt had 6 years to be recovered, after that it drops off your credit file.

Sounds like Abbey sold the debt on.

If they registered defaults more than six years ago they would have dropped off your file automatically & they are not allowed to re-register them.

Probably shouldn't have rung them as that confirms that you are real and that they have the right person/contacts.

I recently had this from Moorcroft - and I held out for about four months before calling them, then delaying it, then eventually getting the debt cancelled.

Abbey will have written this off years ago, then they sell the book of bad debts to these guys for about 0.010 per pound of debt.

Next up will be legal threats and solicitors etc etc - write back and ask them under data protection for every piece of info they have on you.

Any debt older than 6 years that you have not since paid anything on is statute barred, tell them this and once you point it out they break OFT regs if they contact you about it again

Hi Grouch,

not dodgy particularly, plenty of these debt recovery stories in money and finance. Basically they are trawling through ancient debts and hoping you will be 'scared' into paying them. The debt is long gone and expired IIRC. However, if you pay anything towards it, the clock starts again as you how accepted the debt. Ask them to send you the signed, original loan/debit agreement and then tell them to F right off!. I have the same rubbish with the magical Mckenzie Hall of scotland at the mo.....chap tried to tell me he would send the bailiffs in to get money back for a debt I ran up with Barclays in 1988!!! (eighteen at the time)I politely asked him if he was going to trouble himself with things like a County Court Summons etc and he sai 'I don't have to, I can just send the bailiffs in' at which point I said Go and F right off!

If they contact you again, say that the debt is statute barred and not to contact you again. That is the case if it is 6 years or more since you acknowledged any debt and there was never any court order made in favour of it. That should be the end of the matter. They have obviously bought a debt and trying to get anything they can.

Bunch of numpties all of em.
I had one guy ring me up for a debt of 25 quid for import tax on some clothing I purchased from the USA.
After telling me who he was, he then asked me security questions relating to myself.

I said - you're ringing me on an unrecognised number, asking me personal details - put yourself in my position mate, would you answer them? Probably not, goodbye. . . . click

Not heard a peep since.

As mentioned above, they give up in the end once they realise you're too stubborn to acknowledge the debt. I'd certainly react to any correspondance from the courts, but not from these 'FINAL WARNING' lettered debt recovery prats.

The onus isn't on you to put it in writing.

I had a letter from MackenzieHall looking for me. They wanted DOB etc, I told them to go away, if they want me they can write to me. Which they did, again for a £1k debt in 1994. I wrote recorded delivery and reminded them that debt was Statute Barred, and asked for a written confirmation that they will not contact me again. Still not got the confirmation from them though.

I have one chasing me on behalf of the DVLA for an untaxed car I sold 3 years ago.
DVLA have already had the paperwork (twice) and a copy receipt that I sold the car.

Furthermore, the car is in a pound in Edinburgh, having been used in a robbery.
The police know I'm not the owner, yet the s at the dvla can't grasp it.

The baliff looks like a camel with a badly shaved arse who has been taught to walk backwards.
I'm waiting for him to lash out.
I shall then sell my story to anyone who will listen and sue the fk out of someone else

I hope

rofl

I have had bailiffs try and visit me over a disputed debt, quite funny watching them trying to work out how to get across a yard with a rather angry looking rottweiler in it.

I had one from Moorcrfot, over a fine from DVLA which was their own fault and not valid. I just ignored it and eventually they stopped.

More to the point, are you saying I could swan about in a Murcielago for a year then bugger off to South America for 6 years all free of charge? Awesome.
