Can I varnish my pumpkin?

My parents bought us a pumpkin back from France. It is absolutely massive - getting on for 2 feet across, it makes the average carving pumpkin in a supermarket look like a cherry next to a grapefruit.

We carved it out this afternoon, and it has had pride of place sitting outside this evening, amazing people with its bulk.

Question is, can I do anything - such as varnishing it inside and out, maybe - to preserve it for future years? Doubtless we'll still get more to carve in the future, but I can't imagine we'll ever get another even remotely this big again!

Break out the vaseline that you pretend you don't use, and try that.

Surely, for all intents and purposes, it's a vegetable and therefore has a finite shelf-life. No matter how much Vaseline you rub into your pumpkin (oooer Missus) I doubt it will look as impressive this time next year.

It's not about the cost. This thing is absolutely vast. I've never seen anything even remotely close to this size on sale in this country. The usual ones are just pathetically weedy in comparison.

It would have lasted a lot longer if you hadn't cut into it, in a week it will look mouldy in a month it'll look like a pile of sick. Photos are the only option.

Pics will be done tomorrow. I've got some of it tonight, but they're a little difficult to judge scale on, what with it being nothing but a glowing orange pumpkin in the dark!

My local pub had some huge pumpkins outside tonight - roughly the same size as yours. They came from the local market, but I think they had pre-ordered them. You could probably do the same thing next year. The one you've got would make nice soup. (Waste not, want not!)

I refer you to the Environmental Protection Act (2003), Section 4, subsection 11.3 paragraph (iv) unnecessary use of chemical preservatives on renewable plant matter. No you cannot varnish a pumpkin, and no we do not have any freedoms left.
