Abu Dhabi GP comment - thought-provoking?

I was watching the qualifying on Saturday and looked in awe at some of the helicopter shots of the whole track layout and in particular the 'Yas Hotel'.

My wife was with me. She enjoys motorsport and is fairly knowledgable ... for a girl.

Then she pipes up with ... "I wonder how many itinerant workers from the Indian subcontinent were killed during the construction of that".

Well, that screwed my whole weekend.

Will there be a prize at the end of the year for the most inane and pointless post?

What (I think) he meant was that he was impressed by the new circuit in Abu Dhabi, and his wife bought him back to earth with a reminder of how many cheap workers improted from India were probably killed in the construction.

I unerstood it first time. A similiar thought crossed our minds whislt we were watching it. Amazing track, some complaints re: lack of chance to overtake but good otherwise.

I think I understood it.

A flipside of your wife's cynicism would be to wonder how many houses were built and repaired, and how many families were fed on the Indian subcontinent thanks to the construction of that hotel.

It might be low wages and dangerous work according to our standards, but the fact that so many are willing and indeed happy to go and work there suggests that it's better than many of the alternatives available.
