Question about moving in on JSA

Good morning PHland

As some of you know, I'm planning to move in with my girlfriend in Leicester as soon as possible, but need to get some information from someone who may know (the people at JSA and housing office seemingly do not!)

At the moment, I'm on JSA and living at home in Leeds. My girlfriend is a (technicaly) single mother working part time and renting from a private landlord.

She's on income support for hte kiddy and housing benefit

I was hoping to move in with a friend for a few months, but this idea seems to be on the slide for various reasons (nothing sinister thankfully) so I'm now looking into moving in with my girlfriend as soon as possible, but I need to know how my moving in with her would effect her financial status with the government??????????????????

Obviously I want to do things right and I've already started looking for work in Leicester (things looking better than leeds that's for sure) and naturally, I'm looking forward to making the move, but I dont want to drop the good lady in financial schtup

So....

Does anyone know the anser or have any (helpful) advice

do you have things like savings?

if so are they in excess of 16k?

if yes the government expects you to use them all up first before claimin housing... I have a feeling that it will affect her claim if they ask if she has access to someone (living with partner) with savings and says no, etc....

But if you are just a lodger with a formal contract with her (sub letting or with landlord as seperate tennant) then the government can go do one as there is no proof that you are in a relationship.

I was explaining the finer points of that bit with my girlfriend the other day

I have no savings at all, living from day to day due to a few financial outgoings that I didn't need

Technically I can see why you say that... but the government is set up in such a way that it screws people over who live together when one has savings and even a property.

I have both, girlfriend has neither (done to her last few pounds of savings), whilst she is not allowed JSA which I still dont get (work shy people who have never contributed anything to socitey get it), she also is screwed for any housing benefits, council tax benefits, etc etc... Effectively they have said she is a kept women and as such tough st for any help.

This has pissed her off royally as we are treated as a married couple (a single entity) rather than the 2 seperate entities we are just so the government doesnt assist!!

So now she has to come to me for money/cant afford to do anything like travel to interviews, etc... and the benefit scroungers are being paid to sit on their ass and buy 50" plasma tvs...

Fair society? Is it fk...

So why be held up on a little white lie so they can live together?

Why, all the post is is a rant at the system?

I dont commit fraud, neither does the OH, they can come and check if they want and will find her living in my flat rent free at the moment cause she cant afford to pay rent, using the only money she has left going to interviews.

Im just pissed that they can put people wanting to get a job and not having money in such a situation... then to put the cherry on the cake, tell them to claim off their OH who has saved for every penny for a rainy day to make myself have enough just in case Im made redundant again!!

You shouldn't really need to "game" the system. If you want to move in with her, just do it. If you have the income/savings to no longer need the benefits then she will lose them, which is fair enough really. And if you don't, she won't.

Please tell me you aren't so Naive as to believe the benefits system of this country has been setup with any common sense or fairness.

So if you saved hard and you want to move in with your girlfriend and she is on benefits, then she loses them all and you are expected to pay for her?

How is that fair?

It just makes you not want to move in as you did, then have to go through, her losing the benefits, you being drained dry then her needing to go back on benefits.

Seems really fair to the person who has saved no?
