Black tie do

I have been invited to a Sportsmans dinner at the weekend and its a black tie event.

Whats the norm here?
Totally black?
Patterned?
A splash of colour?

Dinner jacket and bow tie. Cummerbund if you like.

I'd steer clear of any prominent patterns and stick to something relatively plain.

Something like a maroon silk bow tie can make a nice change, though personally I'd stick with black.

Stick with black. Colours usually end up looking "whacky"...and thats never good.

agree with this, colour is naff on bow ties.
cummerbunds can look tasteful if they are subtle.
Wing tip collars are incredibly awful as said, especially when you can see the neck strap and buckle of the cheap ready tied bow tie.
Silk bow tied yourself looks the biz and shows some pride.
cufflinks, not too ostentaious and not those horrible little black ones that come with the shirt.

Personally I prefer a red (but not patterned) bow tie with matching cummerbund and hankerchief. It's just slightly less dull than all black but without being silly. Not really sure about the wing vs conventional collar issue though. Always wear a real bow tie though not a pre-tied one.
