We've just had to change the diet of one of our cats because he had become over-sensitive to carbohydrate, and was extremely ill.
The vet recommended putting him on a natural diet, which is basically meat. Chicken, beef, lamb, heart, liver, and fish are all good. Probably best to cook it first because he won't be used to raw meat and you might have an unpleasant surprise as a result.
I was surprised when I looked into it, how little meat is actually in most cat foods - most of them seem to be less than 10% meat. The vet also recommended a ready made food called Nature Menu, which is 70% meat, and that is what we have been feeding him since. It is a slightly more expensive than pouches of more common brands, but they eat less of it and don't have any dried food either.
