An "I can't believe they haven't invented that" thread...
Discussion
As above, what things surprise you by the fact that they haven't been invented?
Here's a couple to get the ball rolling....
1. A Fat-free fat substitute.
Scientists can make sugar-free sugar substitutes. How come they can't make fat-free fat substitutes? OK, whether you might actually want to eat anything with it in is another matter, but then people regularly eat/drink aspartame and the like.
2. A Sky+ music ordering service.
How often do you hear a snippet of music on a TV programme or film that you like, but you don't know what it is. Wouldn't it be great if you could press a button on your remote and have it automatically tell you what it is, and give you the option to download it?

Fat free fat substitute done. Banned in Britain and Canada due to fear over the side effects (that were negligible but potentially unpleasant. Further studies showed additional benefits)

However, by 2000 sales slowed to $200 million, largely caused by the unappealing side effects described on the FDA-mandated health warning label "This Product Contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added."[6]
This condition (normally occurring only by excessive consumption in a short period of time) became popularly known as "anal leakage", which can be embarrassing.

The FDA removed the warning requirement in 2003 as it had "conducted a scientific review of several post-market studies submitted by P&G, as well as adverse event reports submitted by P&G and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (a particularly outspoken critic). The FDA concluded that the label statement was no longer warranted", in spite of having received over 20,000 complaints.[8] When removing the Olestra warning label, the FDA cited a 6-week Procter & Gamble (makers of Olestra) study of more than 3000 people showing that an Olestra-eating group experienced only a small increase in bowel movement frequency
Just don't eat four family size bags of crisps at one go. No different than a good curry.

A cure for all the problems with R75/MGZT 260's?

What's wrong with yours then? Mine's still pretty much the most reliable car I've owned.
You had none of the usual heater, radiator, handbrake, COP, etc, etc, etc, problems then?
There is a vast amount of technical developments and inventions that are indeed known but have never been commercialised for one reason or another. In fact it's often claimed that 80% of the world's technical knowlledge can be found in the patent domain. This may or may not be true but in my work I often meet people who are fairly expert in their field who with hand on heart believe that their invention is totally new and unique as they have never seen it anywhere else. More often than not that it is well known from patent documents and frequently a quick search on Google or Scirus.
Still, there is the odd nugget out there, like thestick Animal Toy of US Patent No. 6360693

That's already here - it's called Shazam. Got it on my phone and does everything you describe sending me a link to itunes to download it.I was actually thinking about this earlier this week so a rather opportune thread. Mine is.....
Dettol you can drink.
Hear me out here - Dettol kills 99.9% of all known germs. If you got belly ache then just drink some of Dr Dave's Digestible Dettol & you're bob on in no time at all.
So is there a good reason it hasn't been invented or should I pop & see the Dragons Den with my champers on ice?
