Round my way a three locals died a year or two back, one of them having fallen into a slurry tank and his two co-workers trying to get him out. That wouldn't have been a good way to go either.

Why not investigate / look out the window or call the cops.

Where I live, even though in the middle of the city, it is pitch black at night (no street lights) and I always look out if I hear any screams. Thankfully so far it has always been just kids mucking about, but I'd like to think that other neighbours would do the same incase one day it is something much more serious.

I grew up out of town and back then I'd have ventured out to see what it was. Sadly I'm now rapidly becoming a Londoner - as selfish and jaded as everyone else in the city - so I probably wouldn't have done anything either. It is a tragic thing to say, but if I'm honest I doubt many people in urban areas would go to investigate, particularly if it meant getting out of bed.

This. I suspect it's nothing to do with "this day and age", and a lot to do with the distribution of responsibility and standard human psychology.

A truly horrible way to die and shocking that no-one even bothered to look outside.

I also fail to see the relevance of reporting the fact that the guy was over the drink-drive limit. He was walking home for god's sake and drowned, its not like he was about to jump in a car and drive away.
