My wife has just come back from a science lecture and is asking me all these tricky questions about the universe and planets.

Is it just me who is mad, or does this make sense to anyone else?

Surely if the universe in infinate, it therefore goes on for ever and ever. If this is the case at some point in time you are going to come across an identical dimension to the one you are now in. Where everything is exactly the same as the place you have left.

Does this sound nonsense, or just simple common sense?teacher

If everything is exactly the same you wouldn't know you're in a different place and would just think that something failed and you didn't go anywhere.

not necessarily, there are an infinite number of real numbers, and they are all different, likewise you could in principle have an infinite number of universes with none of them being exactly the same. nerd

Never thought of it like that, have you just destroyed my scientific theory?

Wouldn't the true meaning of infinity mean that there would HAVE to be one exaclty the same?

no, it could be that our particular infinite set of parallel universes is infinite, but some of the parallel universes were exact duplicates.

Why does it have to be different dimenion, with the same stuff? It could be like going for a walk in the countryside. You don;'t see the same trees becuse you have gone a long way? There could, and in my mind should, just be more stuff out there. There is, of course the theory that the universe is vast, and infinite, but our own big bang could be a localised event. There could be other universes, that have had their own big bang expansion... Who knows.

I think this is the main point of some of these 'multi universe' theories.
Everyone can speculate until the cows come home, but I think some things will be near impossible to get 100% correct.

Well, everything isn't 100% as we haven't been everywhere in the universe, and encountered all possibilities, but yeah. Still, fun to think about it.

Yes indeed but more than that; the true meaning of infinity would mean that there are an infinite number exactly the same and equally an infinite number infinitely different.

IIRC some infinities are bigger than others, for instance the countably inifnite where you could establish a one to one correspondence with the natural numbers and uncountably infinite sets, such as the real numbers. I think that means you can have an infinite set without duplicates or an infinite number of sets containing a finite number of duplicates (each element of a countably infinite being a finite set of equivalent universes).

My collection of half remembered maths ends about there! wink

The universe may or may not be infinite, but most probably doesn't have have an infinite amount of matter in it.

You can't really think of it in terms of 'places to visit' either, since it will almost certainly be impossible to ever travel from one 'side' of the universe to the other.

My understanding was that infinite in the case of the universe was just a way to describe the curvature of space time. if you keep going in a straight line in theory you will come back to the same point eventually because of curved space time. I think that's what Stephen Hawking said anyway. Unless I'm missing something the universe couldn't be truly infinite if it emerged from a big bang as it would have to have a starting point and a wave front of expansion. If it has an 'edge' then it can't be infinite.

*I'm more than happy to be corrected on any or all of the above!

Look for "a universe from nothing" on YouTube. I'd link to it, but in the airport on my iPod
