Just sitting down to Top gear tonight when the buzzer to the gates went,unusual 9pm sunday night. I went out and a middle age couple had seen a young chap in our front garden around the cars. When he realised he'd been seen he tried to force the gates couldn't do that so opted for through the bushes exit.
I had a run around the roads near by but nobody around in this time the mrs had called the police they arrived about 10mins later in an unmarked car. They said they will be in the area looking around.
So now I have the mrs panicking like mad I'm sat in the front room curtains open no lights on with a 7 iron to hand. I think it's going to be a long night.

Easier said than done when you have 3 young children and friends a few months ago were subject to an armed burglary.

7 iron is too long for close quarters combat in a confined space (say, indoors). You need the 6 or 8-battery Mag-light, underhand grip at torch-head with the battery section resting on your shoulder. Use the light to momentarily blind the intruder and immediately swing the battery section over onto the nearest piece of him you can get to.

Or something. Ive never done it, but I have bought one with this exact intention, which was lucky because I had it when the drug dealer next door took refuge in my garden after a rival dealer came to nick his wad, rip his crop and stick him in intensive care, for the second night in a row*.

* In a semi respectable beach-side suburb of Perth, Western Australia, for those complaining about "broken britain".

I'd be the same. I waited like you once when I had my car keyed and kicked. You'll be at work tomorrow earning money to buy nice things, and that scum will be making money selling the nice things they've stolen from people like you.

A 2ft crowbar has been under my bed since we awoke one morning at 1am to the sound of someone trying to jemmy the conservatory window. Not a nice feeling at all. It's very, very unlikely that they will be back having been spotted, but good luck for tonight.

A 7 iron can do plenty of damage, I have the dents in my head to prove it.

As a choice of weapon I'd go for a hurley, can't imagine he'll be back though they brick it when spotted.

Motion-activated security lighting is an obvious deterrent. My closest neighbour has one that must be visible from Space.

Torch sounds much lika a much better option.

Have you never had a car alarm go off in the night, and seen a scally running away as you've gotten to the window? Or gone out your front door to see someone shifty walk away from the end of your driveway?

If so you're lucky. In the OP's position I would be doing the exact same thing.
