Distance Learning

Hi All

Has anyone done any distance learning i.e open university courses/degrees

Thinking of doing one myself any suggestions

Im looking at doing one too, Oxford College seem to have some decent stuff.

i'm halfway through a BEng with Open University, personally now think i'm barmy trying to do it but have started so will finish (& probably do the MEng too to be complete)

how much does an OU course cost? I looked into it before and it seems REALLY expensive?

Depends whether you want to do a course that is going to help you in your current employment, or whether you want to do a course purely for your own interest and betterment.

Some employers will help if it is course they are going to get direct benefit from, maybe worth asking through your work. Mine handily has a large amount of schemes allowing you to do course that have direct benefit to the work place.

i did the traditional degree route so know how much i paid for that & the OU actually works out about the same overall imo but seems alot when you look at the costs for the individual courses.

what do you class as a foundation year? with OU you don't need any previous experience/grades from elsewhere. also its not a set course layout, you pick the modules that interest you but you have to have certain weightings in certain areas/levels for your modules to count to that degree at the end.

I get it now. I kind of wanted to do an access course online and then go to "Normal" university for the 3 year degree. Don't have any a levels so that's my only route.

ah right, you could do the degree with OU straight off your back now but they don't do a levels that you require to go do a traditional uni course you would need to do the a levels required at college in the evenings or something.
from the courses i've done i've met me such as myself who work full time & fit the studies around their job (1 or 2 modules a year) & people who are just studying full time with OU doing more modules a year.

I work at the OU! Not an advisor but can answer a few questions if you have any. As for the cost- you can pay by OUSBA which is a budget account, can pay monthly during the course.

Did compTia A+ through computeach, which is a distance learning thing, and its okay if you are disciplined enough to stick at it(and you get the help from your tutors online)

Yeah I did look at doing something like that, I'd just rather get on with it as opposed to spending more time on a-levels.

Allegedly doing an OU module, but it is all too easy to end up listening to the radio and surfing the net rather than doing the work I fully intended to do now.

The access courses take just as much time as a-levels and the a-levels are generally better thought of by admissions tutors. Also if you are applying as a mature student the admissions path is different so it might be worth talking to the relevant tutors and getting their advice on what courses would make admission easier.
