Can one haggle with marked supermarket prices?

I know its not normally done by people here in the UK, but it is 'ok' to haggle with marked prices on items in a supermarket?
I have seen a sat nav unit in Aldi that has been reduced to £80 from £150ish.
I was wondering if my attempt to haggle a further £10-£15 off the price would see them going 'WTF?' ?

At that sort of price drop already i imagine they wont need to discount further to get people to buy it.
Doesnt mean you can't try though!
Just remember that a good haggle is based on the insecurity of the seller that no-one else will come along and buy it at full price (therefore a discount is better than no sale). If this has dropped almost 50% i doubt there will be many left before you even get to the store

I've negotiated discounts and freebies in PC World before. If you speak to the right people and are respectful, it's surprising what you can achieve.
I think I've mentioned it on here before, but I got a chunk off a laptop, a free case for it and a free portable wireless mouse. Sometimes, just asking for a better price can result in a positive outcome. The key is to be polite and respectful.
ETA: I got a price-match on a TV from Currys; nothing remarkable there, but then I negotiated a free HDMI lead and half-price on the delivery too. Often the discount is in the extras - the HDMI lead was £49 RRP and delivery should've been £20 - so a saving of £60 all in, plus I got the TV down from £749 to £580. Again, ask nicely and be cheeky with it - if your first offer doesn't embarrass you, it's not low enough..
Another ETA: You can pull the pants down on mobile contracts too.. I have an Android G1 on T-Mobile with £180/mo usage (Flext35 I think), unlimited 3G access, phone for free and I pay £15/mo + VAT. Ask, ask, ask. The worst a shop can say is 'no'.

Ive not tried haggling in supermarkets but if i was to try and buy a TV or something say £200+ i would give it a go, i wouldnt hold much hope tho, worst they could say is no.
I haggled some Specs down from £560 to £250 in a high street optician chain, so anything is possible.
Be prepared > If you've seen something the same or similar cheaper elseware take proof with you, be clear on what you want to pay (and what you actually want), have a price or threshold in your head.
Use cash > If you have a wad of readies (especially if you only have what you are willing to pay) they will more likely reduce the price
Ask to speak to someone senior > If you get stone walled ask to speak to the manager
Be Rational > be calm and fair, remember they are just doing their job.
Walk away > If you dont get what you want, a sales assistant/manager goes into sales patter mode (trying to sell you a different product or service, this happens alot to me) or you get muddled by the sales persons mumbo jumbo just walk away.
Always remember that the same product is ALWAYS available elseware.

Depends. Probably not at the Aldi/Costco end of things, unless it was shop soiled or damaged. If it's already the cheapest, and the retailer knows it is, why on earth would they further erode a small margin?

It does beg the question 'why?' though. Why would you haggle like some third world coolie when the price has been halved already?
And if you think that is acceptable, why wouldn't you haggle on every item you ever buy, anywhere?
Do you go to fill your car and expect to haggle the price of petrol with the attendant?
Do you call the gas board and make an offer on your bill, tell them you'll give them half what they want, then expect them to meet you halfway?
I've negotiated on gas, electrical and water rates before. Also on interest rates on credit cards (I have a card that now has a lower 'life of balance' rate than any loan I could get, making it better value in the longer run. It's not about being tight, it's about getting the best deal for yourself, and one that the person/company supplying the goods/service is happy to provide at a lower rate. If it's business they don't want or it isn't profitable, they'll tell you 'no'. BTW, where I've negotiated rates on things, I NEVER take the proverbial with payment, eg. mobile contract, credit card etc. They were good enough to do me a good deal, the very least I can do is pay them what they ask for, when they ask!

I dunno. I've made about £300 profit on eBay thanks to Aldi. Buy a number of a certain product which is sometimes available, get home, stick it on eBay and make around £100 a time. So, they do sometimes sell stuff below 'market rate', as it were.I would be surprised if Aldi will knock anything off. They already know that their prices are very low and the general attitude is of "It's there if you want it, if you don't then someone else will come along". That is why they have "specials". They are short term offers because the company buyers have been able to get a one-off bulk buy discount so they only have the items in store for a week or two.

This particular sat-nav that has caught my eye has been there in the counter display cabinet for over five-six months and is obviously not selling at the £150 price mark.
Just recently I noticed they have dropped the price and so they realise themselves it is priced too high for what it is.
I have seen 2nd hand versions of the same sat nav unit on ebay and the like for around £50-£60.
So why wouldn't I feel the need to haggle?
Why pay more for an item when I could get it for less?
In the past I have haggled the price on my line rental, broadband, sky+, electricity, cars etc. etc.
If I was determined enough to haggle on every price item then I think I would!
But I'd say I would become tired of it....so choose to haggle where I think it might be worth it.
Many other countries haggle on price as a matter of course....it seems people in the UK are afraid or embarrassed to do it.
(me being one of them in a lot of situations.....hence this thread)
