English mustard, burning sensation in your nose... how?
Discussion
When you eat too much?
Every so often I go to borough market and always partake in the roast beef dinner in a sandwich, then lavish it with loads of english mustard cause its delicious.
Without fail its the only food I eat that the vapours always give a burning sensation when eating, nothing else does that to me, not chillies, insanity sauce, etc.
What creates it and how does it work?
Why is it so addictive?
So funny watching the OH take a bite after warning her it has an unsual kick and then the burn starts and she jumps up and starts running around for the 10-15 seconds the sensation lasts for.
English mustard = awesome stuff!!

Re: addictive nature, you'll find that most painful stimuli, like severe exercise, trauma, and eating very spicy food, do trigger the release of the bodies own endogenous (naturally-occurring) opioid-like substances in the brain including endorphin and enkephalin.
Addiction to the rush of your own morphine like substances might explain some peoples' obsession with burning themselves (at both ends) on hot curries, mountain climbing and obsessive severe exercise (see also : http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/articles/ar...
I guess it probably explains some of the M of S&M too...
Don't take it too far:
