....these are just a small selection of the acronyms I use on a day-to-day basis....I didn't realise how many there are in the construction/architecture/energy assessment sector.

The only other proffession with as many acronyms must be teachers?!

So, what acronyms do you use on a daily basis - and are there some you use and don't even know the meaning of!

Acronyms... when I was more 'involved' in GSM/mobile, used to get the MACH acronym book every year... (MACH were a GSM clearing house (don't ask)) and the book ran to over 100 pages of all the acronyms used in mobile. Used to make it an absolute duty to learn a couple of the more bizarre ones before 'important meetings' and drop them into conversation....

Those were the days... yawn... sleep

There are far too many in air traffic.
A new project I've seen called 'SLAM' (hehe) is actually an abbreviation of an abbreviation.

I simply don't believe that any of your industries have more acronyms than the military. They even have acronyms where one letter stands for another acronym, or where a series of the same letter is replaced by a number, for example an American one I came across "D16", an acronym composed of 16 words all beginning with D!

Oh, I don't think you'll find many industries that can beat the Motor Industry for that...

ABS, EBA, PSM, PCM, CBC, PASM, CC, VVT, HID, ACC, VDIM, CAC, ESR, HRW, etc.... and that's just a few car features: every program, department and job title in the industry also has at least two different acronyms rolleyes

I would be surprised if any field/area/profession has more acronyms that IT. Even within one particular part of a technology there can be dozens, if not more..

Just for sts and giggles, Acronyms from the product spec sheet of a single networking switch..

MDI/MDIX
Gbps
Mpps
MAC
VLAN
GVRP
RTG
PVST+
RVI
IEEE
LLDP
LLDP-MED
VoIP
STP
CoS
MSTP
MST
PAC
PoE
LACP
IPv4
ARP
RIPv1/v2
OSPF
BGP
IS-IS
VRRP
IPv6
ND
RIPng
MPLS
CCC
RFC
MIB
ICMP
UDP
IP
TFTP
TCP
RARP
HTTP
HTTPS
CIDR

And that doesnt include the lists of different versions/revisions/technologies/protocols/tools that use the same acronym, for example each of these is a different protocol or technology.

• IEEE 802.1D
• IEEE 802.1p
• IEEE 802.1Q
• IEEE 802.1s
• IEEE 802.1w
• IEEE 802.1X
• IEEE 802.3
• IEEE 802.3u
• IEEE 802.3ab
• IEEE 802.3z
• IEEE 802.3ae
• IEEE 802.3af
• IEEE 802.3x
• IEEE 802.3ad
• IEEE 802.3ah

Wickid innit... I've been doing this for 14 years and I'd still have to google some of them.
