I think you would like this.

It's an old family photo album, it took me a while to work out whose but I believe it's my mothers uncle who died decades ago. I do remember hearing when I was a child that he'd been in the Navy and had been to Bikini Atoll. This photo album not only contains photos of troops going to war, but old aircraft carriers, submarines, and atom bombs.

Photos to follow as soon as I install the scanner!

Right, here we go, first image with more to follow:

That's it, the remainder of the album is filled with postcards of places he visited inc India, China, Gibraltar, Honolulu, Bermuda, the Philipines, the US and Australia where he died in a motorcycle car (I think from a letter here) accident near Perth around 1968.

Typical isn't it, Windows 7 didn't automatically install the scanner so I'm now waiting on Epsons slow download to complete. I haven't even looked through the entire album. My first thought was "I must post these on PH"

Absolutely.

Funny, I was reminded of this today when I found Deacon Blue's song about Harold Agnew "He Looks Like Spencer Tracy now" in my iTunes. Hadn't heard it for yonks.

From your title I'd assumed that you and Eric had become a couple.

Nice pics though. Do you have any background to them at all?

the Carrier is HMS Bulwark, btw

ETA HMS Bulwark RO8 Commando Carrier. Completed in November 1948 Harland and Wolff Belfast. She served in the Royal Navy from 1948 until 1981. Originally built as a light fleet carrier, HMS Bulwark had an amazing record in action and in peace time exercises

The squadies are carrying SLRs and wearing 58 pattern webbing, doesnt look like they are wearing DPM though, hmm. Doesnt appear to be BFA's on the SLRs too. Im sure someone will be along with more info who knows more.

It is certainly 'Booties' embarking the old Bulwark, they seem to be sporting Belgian FN's and from their dress I'd say it was early 1960's.

Have too agree first general DPM issue was from 68, RM should be wearing denisons though but i dont think that would show up well on photos.

Nice picture of a Wessex and some mushroom clouds too.

The woman who wrote to my grandmother to tell her about the funeral and the accident, obviously 'tact' wasn't a word in her vocabulary;

"the accident happened in a blinding rainstorm. He was badly hurt and lived for 4 hours. His car is like a concertina, the engine is in the back seat and there's no bonnet visible"

Would appear to be this:

British nuclear tests On May 15, 1957, Britain attempted to detonate its first hydrogen bomb (code name Yellow Sun) at Malden Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Although the bomb’s small yield indicated that fusion had not occurred, data from the test were successfully applied to the November 8 test over nearby Christmas Island.
