I don't know why but I think it's great you want to buy one. hehe

Presumably it doesn't do much unless you are near to something a bit nasty?

i have used one, it worked, it was yellow.

get a yellow one?

stovey: try normal table salt vs Lo-salt... The low sodium salt is much more radioactive due to the potassium chloride it contains.

You can also try smoke detectors and brazil nuts.

I've seen one. It was also yellow.

Maybe yellow is the most accurate colour?

A CCCP era one with sickles on and such like would be pretty funky

As far as I know its relatively harmless.

Put it in the same category as 'double plug in an extension lead' and 'telephone mast near your house'

Ehmmm, yeah, I've got a couple of RA meters in the cupboard next to me. One for measuring Gamma and one for measuring Neutron. We use Ludlum but I can't imagine they're cheap and they need to be calibrated every six months by an outside vendor.
