Silly question no doubt but you know when you're driving along and for half a mile or so it reeks of flatulence (even after opening the window before anyone says it) - what is it?

It's not manure as far as I know and I'd assumed anything that was drains or sewer related would smell of actual st.

it could be human waste that is being sprayed onto the crops/fields, farmers like it as its cheaper than normal fertiliser which is closely linked to the price of oil and has shot up over the past year

i was doing some ground works in a silage clamp last year i have no problem with horse poo cow poo etc etc but when he told me what had been stored there the week before i was heaving like a good un smile its all treated prior to going to the farms but never the less urgh.........

This, the fart smell is when catalytic converter isn't working properly.

It smells like this on telegraph hill (A38 Exeter). I'd always suspected it was when drivers had to floor it to get up the hill?

And my observation is that Vauxhauls are particularly prone to this. Not suprising they smell of st really!

Oh yes. If the wind is in the right direction, the smell can quite easily reach the M25/M3 junction. In fact, with even a moderate breeze it can reach as far as the M25/M23 junction.
