OK,

Forget home computers, computer games etc, pretend for a moment they don't exist.....

The question is, would your quality of life be better or worse if television had not been invented back in the early 20th century?

If you had grown up during the 1930's/40's there would almost certainly not have been be a "goggle box" in the corner of your home , so you would have had to make your own entertainment.

Some advantages FOR TV:-

Educational, you can learn about and see events happening on the other side of the world.

A good thing for keeping your young kids amused, when you have jobs to do...

Keeps you entertained during those long cold winter nights,

Brings sport into your home, that you would not otherwise get to see.

Brings comfort and entertainment to the elderly, housebound and infirm,

Gives you opportunity to see old classic B/W films

Advantages of NOT having a TV....

The art of conversation would return

No Jeremey Kyle, Jerry Springer, "Jungle" etc,

No more "DFS" ads every fifteen minutes

More family sing a longs around the family upright piano in the parlour....biggrin

Encourage you to take up a hobby, such as model making, painting, reading etc....

So, over to the PH Massive.............

Better because we would not live in a world where the power of a celebrity rules the roost.

I think its stopped thousands of people going mad when they have to spend some time living alone...

if you think about it, for some reason, you don't feel lonely with the TV on...

Personally, I'd say worse. I gained a lot of enthusiasm for the outside world/interests from TV. Since being connected to the net, I've turned into a bit of a vegetable.

Question should be....would the world be better if they hadn't invented commercial television.

What if John Logie Baird's Televizor system had caught on, instead of the superior Cathode Ray Tube system?

That's what Radio 4 is for.

I suppose without it we'd only have the stonings for entertainment. Or the other thing; it's probably responsible for a reduction in birthrate which has to be good environmentally.

Though in the 1930s the birthrate was falling. Perhaps the gramophone put people off reproductive pastimes.

Television had started then. It was the RADIATION from the transmitter masts.

For: Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, and that "Shakespeare's Sister" sketch by Newman and Baddiel.

Those shining examples more than make up for the billions of hours of tripe broadcast elsewhere.

I rest my case.

We are much better off for the invention of television. However, like all inventions, it has its negative aspects too.

On balance, I'd prefer a world with TV rather than without.
