Since playing Total War, growing up near the caves of Wemyss, etc, I've always had a passing interest in the Picts, but never really pursued it beyond seeking out their corner in the British museum. From what I gather, like most of our history, there isn't much kicking around pre-Roman times and there seems to be lots of conjecture on many things.

Nonetheless, I was wondering if anyone had come across a good, yet accesible book on pre-Roman culture/history north of the Forth-Clyde or, better yet, a book on the rise and fall of the Picts pre & post Roman invasion.

Not a book, but I learnt a bit about their history from a board game called Brittania, which allowed up to four people to 'play' the various tribes and invading forces. It came with a pretty decent overview of what actually happened. No longer available, sadly. From what I remember they weren't genocided- their descendants are still here, largely in the same area.

ETA- The Wiki article is decent reading; I've bookmarked it for tomorrow. It's a non-current subject so it'll be fairly accurate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picts

Didn't Mel Gibson make a documnetary about this subject a few years back? I think the content was pretty close to established historical fact!

It was pretty good until 300 came along, which took factual accuracy to another level.
